To you who have been members of the Albany College Student
Body during the College year 1925-26, I would pen a brief message of
appreciation. Appreciation is expressed for your genercus spirit of
loyalty to the spirit of Albany Collr.ge, the spirit that is the intangible,
but no Jess real, product of the highest aspirations and joint labors of
the student leadership and of the faculty.
It is a matter for congratulation that students and faculty with hi.gh
minded sympathetic co-operation have evolved a constitution for the
"Executive Council of the Albany College Community." This organiz­
ation should be a large factor in ushering in the "Greater Alb.any."
Yes, Albany is growing materially. This year has seen the con-
struction of a handsome modern college building-our new college home.
Our quarters for the next college year will be more commcdious and at­
tractive than ever before. Many have characterized our new building
as one of the most substantial and attractive college buildings in the
Northwest.
Our group is growing in numbers. The number of college students
is fifty-five percent above that of two years ago. There is no doubt
that the increase next year will be substantial, for our accommodations
will be larger and more pleasing.
The re.al greatness of Albany, however, will not be measured by the
magnitude or number of our college buildings or by the size of our student
group. It is measured by the greatness of the spirit that dominates the
life of the campus, by the rich fellowships that are formed, by the high
intellectual and spiritual idealism that characterizes the work of the
athletic field, the social life, and the class room.
Yes, the "Greater Albany" must be built in our aspirations, in our
fellowships, in our earnest endeavors, in our loyalty to one another, in
our depth and bi-eadth of purpose and vision, in our loyalty to Christ and
his pro.giam, in our inner lives.
When we meet at the opening of the next college year, we shall
meet in a larger and more beautiful material structure .and under far
more favorable conditions. Shall our minds be more purposeful and
our hearts be far more receptive to the qualities that make for the
"Greater Albany?" Sincerely yours,

The Student Self-Hel1> C-0llege of the Pacific Coast.
Albany is recognized by the Un.ited States Commissioner of Educa­
tion as a standard college of Liberal Arts. It provides the following
major departments of instruction:
(1) Ancient Languages, (2) Bible, (3) Biology, (4) Chemistry (5)
Education and Psychology, (6) English Literature, (7) History and Po­
litical Science, (8) Mathematics, (9) Modern Languages (10) Physics (11)
Public Speaking, (12) Sociology.
Special courses are provided for students who wish to prepare fo1·
teaching positions in high ~chools. Literary-Professional courses are
offered covering the first college year of work for students desiring to
study Engineering, Medicine, Law, Agriculture, Business Administration,
Pharmacy, etc.
All members of the college faculty have completed special work in
theii· respective fields in standard graduate schools, an(! fulfill the most
ri.gid standards fixed for faculties in standard colleges.
The College School of Music provides instruction in voice, piano,
organ, violin and professional courses.
The students seli-help plan of the college provides opportunities for
students to earn a part, and in some cases all, of their college expenses.
The modern fire-proof college building and greatly increased equipment
will render it possibl,e for the college to accept a much larger number of
students than heretofore.

After two weeks of showing the Rooks hO\\. to act we decided
to institute a new traditio11. The .'ophomorc Class entertained the
l,ooks at a "Peace Party." cla~s warfare was declared at an e11cl,
,,ncl the two settled down to study. At the end of the first term
our class showed by its grade~ that it had been a live class schola~t-
ic:a lly. too.
ln :.\thletics and Forensics we have been very active. All the
managers in these two fields. with one exception. arc Sophomore
c:las!-me11. On the teams we have do11e our part in fighting for
u1r college.

There came into existence on September 22. 1925, the
Freshman class ever known to enter Albany College. It wa, a
c:lass of pep and high ambitions. whose desire was to make the
npper-classmen realize the benefit of having such an addition to
the college.
\Ve enjoyed college from the first day we registered. and have
taken an interest in all activities sponsored by the college.
After becoming accustomed to the daily routine of classes. we
htld a class meeting which resulted in the election of the follo,ring
officers: President, Warren Kirkpatrick; \'ice-President. Inez Hey­
man; Secretary, Evelyn Palmer; Treasurer, :ifalcolm :iifcLeocl.
On September twenty-fifth, the upper-classmen gave us a ~e­
c-eption. The first number on the program was our initiation, wh!ch
we thoroughly enjoyed. After that, we were cordially welcom':!d
to Albany College, and presented with Rook .Bibles. Later the
boys donned their little green caps, and the girls were
tc wear green ribbons on Mondays and Fridays.
On the second of October, we held our first class party.
was peace and quiet the entire evening, as we out-witted the upper­
dassmen. However, if you should chance to ask a few members
of the Freshmen class the solution as to how to run Fo1·cls with­
c•ut keys, a very thrilling episode might be narrated.
The Sophs declared war at an encl, October ninth, in the form
of a Peace Party, held at the Scout Cabin. A peaceful, harmoninu
and enjoyable evening was spent by both Rook: and Sophs.
Besides these social functions, the Freshmen have enjoyed
other social gatherings in which they were invited to mingle, during
the year.
The Class of '29 has kept up its pep throughout the year, and
has completed its first year of college with a splendid record.
In conclusion, we wish to guarantee the class of '30 a warm
reception, and hope they will enjoy as happy and prosperous a
Freshman year as we, the members of the class of '29, have had
in our first year at Albany.

The Pirate's Guide is a new publication in Albany this year. It
is a handbook for the students and contains the constitution of the
student body. traditions, a calendar of the school year, the songs
and yells of the school, and many other very important features.
It is especially important to those who enter college for the first
time because it helps them to get acquainted with the customs of
Albany sooner than they otherwise could.
In order to make it successful the first year the 1925 Orange
i'eal Staff was given complete control. ,\Jost of the work is clone
during the summer and the manual is ready for sale when school
opens in the fall. In this way the work which is involved in pub­
lication comes at a time when it does not interfere in any way with
school work. The success of it this year was clue largely to the
hard work of Carl Gregory. the editor, and I au! Ellis, business
manager. The students of Albany wish to thank them for the part
which they had in publishing this book, and we hope that the
'Pirates' Guide' in the future may be as big a success as this one

The Students and Faculty of Albany College. having found the
previous system of student government u1~satisfactory, have this
year established an entirely different type than has ever before be<cn
attempted in this college. The principal governing body is the
Exec_utive Council. the purpose of which is chiefly to keep things
n111111ng smoothly between students and faculty, and between the
ciifferent factions of the student body. It is a representative body.
lo which all of the committees are directly responsible. As 1110,t
oi the committees are appointee\ by the Council it is the duty of
the Council to see that the work is clone that is assigned to each
committee. All reports from each committee must be acceptable
to the executive council and all budgets and schedules must be re­
ferred to it for approval before going into effect.

Nothing shows the willingness of any community or oro-aniza­
tion to accept the responsibilities of the present day. more than the
attempts at dramatic productions. l\ o matter ,.,that the class of
piay produced, nor the way it is staged. the attempt at least shows
that there is still ·ome sign of life.
After more than a year without plays. a group of students
banded together in the winter term of 1925. and influenced the
qudent body to pass favorably upon a student body play, the pro­
ceeds of which were to go into the student body fund.
Prof. Raymond E. Baker. head of the edcuation department
and ,~ follower of modern drama. accepted the responsibility of
coachmg the play. and he chose Oscar \Vilcle's wonderful comedy.

For the annual college student body play. a committee com­
posed of Ardis Eberle, Go!·don i\lcl)o?1ald. Ven~on Henderson, and
~lrs. Cogswell, selected "Only 38'', one of the very lc:test comecE'.:'.s.
The play is three acts in length, and was written by Aug·ustus
Thomas.
Following the selection of the play the 111:uiaging committee
1•icked Clark Kendall as business manager. and set the date of the
rnly appearance of the play for r\pril 23. i\[rs. Esther Cogswell,
a prominent dramatic instructor in Illinois high schools, consented
to coach the play, the proceeds of which arc to be turned over to
the athletic department.
With the selection of the play, :.frs. Cogswell sent out a call
for aspirants for places in the cast. and about fifty student answered
the call. After three elimination try-outs the following cast was

For the ·first time in several years a band was organized in the
College. The band made up in quality what it lacked in quantity.
It played for many of the athletic contests throughout the year.
a~ well as for rallies and other occasions.
The peppy music \\'hich the band producer! helped greatly i11
keeping up the old school pep and enthusiasm, especially at the
;::-ames. The outside help on the part of some High School student!
«nd others aided materially and was greatly appreciated.
With· the start that has been made this year. there is no rea,011
why the school cannot back up this organization, as it does all
others. and. as a result, the band should become better from year
t,J year and be a source of real service to Albany College.

The college orchestra this year, under the able leadership of
Professor Miller, has made splendid progress.
During the year the orchestra played for several school par­
ties. It also had other engagements. for church programs and
the like. Two trips were made to the Riverside community club­
house where short concert'> were given.
Practice has been started for a concert, which will probably
be given later in the year.
