w1th the workings of the council, the counc1l is necessarily

Student council meetings on thts campus are open and all
members ot the Associated Students of Lewis and Clark col­
lege arc invitc..'<i to attend them. We doubt that turnouts for
council mct!Ling s would bt> too large C\'cn were each student
i§ued a gilt-t.>dged m\'itutlon. In fact, we are prone to think
that all th1s ''whoop-and- holler" about lack of publicity is
little more than a cover-up by thl.' indh·iduol student for his

our books. It is, with a \'cry lew exceptions, not the members
of the student council who fail to take the interests of the

It is this "select fcw"-who nrc, incidentally chosen direct­
ly or indiPctly by the ASLC-who hnve an interest in stu·
dent acti\'lllcs . We would like to suggest that the council is
doing a satisfactory job of keeping ah\'c interest in stud~nt
activities in view of the particular problems which the com-
mutcl's college faces. •
As for the LOG's stand on council publicny, it is this: In
its e\·eryday decisions and actions, the council does little that
is newsworthy . It's runctions. a~ do the functions of any erfi·
cient go,·ernmental organ, fall largely into a routine pattern.
A ruling body which acts consist~ntly on ~emational issues is
generally a malfunc tioning group.
We expect, of coursct to henr a certam number of complaints
about student go\'ernmenl. and are prepared to shrug these
off but; when a concentration of that unbased criticit>m
reaches our ears. as through the results of this poll, we feel it
ts time to speak out m defense.
We admire the honesty of those who say, "We do not know."
It is for this reason, that we who do know, say that your
student counc.i) IS not without serious fault but that the larg­
est part of its membership is conscientious ly strh·ing to ser\'e
