national fraternities in opposition to the spll'lt of this college
wh1ch calls itself, and is striving to become in actuality, a
"Christian communitv?" r
ln tht: not-too-di~tant future, the question of natiOnal:, will
come to a head. We ha\'C no ax to gnnd but the inte1 ests of
th~ college as to what that choice should b~. But we do fer
\'lmUy hope that when the dccis1on is mode by t~c students
for ll ts tlte studenl.s who will have a largl! say m determining
the outcome of the issue-it will be l>nsed upon the pomt in
que. tlon and will be the result of a good deal of sll·aight
thinkmg.
On such deci.:.ions as this rest the future of this college. We
would hnte to see that iuture shaped by emotional leanings
or ndolcscent predetermmation.
·:-A Fine _ ttitu(le ·;
Selection of Lewis and Clark coll~ge ior as~ocinte member
ship m the National Associallon of Schools ot Music is an
early Christmas present for the PalaUnc hill inst1tute and. we
imagine, particularly for those men on the faculty o{ the mu
s-ical department who are the key figur~.s in the de\·elopment
of the department here.
Howc\·er. we cannot sny lhat admi~ion o! this college into
the NASM is too much of a surprise. Of cour~e. il takes time
for such developments to materialize, but those who follow
the path of this yet young college and who ha\'e laith in her
know thal future times will bnng more laurels to rest upon
her head.
What we particularly like in lhe N ASM examiner's report
on Lewis and Clark is this phrase: ''There is a fine attitude
among the faculty in the department of music as far as the
sharing of 1deas. teaching techniques and re:.ourccs is con
cented."
• That attitude, to us, is lhe thing that gives this college its
unique character, its ability to overcome obstacles and 1ts un
alterable faith 10 its own future.

"Christian communitv?" r
ln tht: not-too-di~tant future, the question of natiOnal:, will
come to a head. We ha\'C no ax to gnnd but the inte1 ests of
th~ college as to what that choice should b~. But we do fer
\'lmUy hope that when the dccis1on is mode by t~c students

the outcome of the issue-it will be l>nsed upon the pomt in
que. tlon and will be the result of a good deal of sll·aight

On such deci.:.ions as this rest the future of this college. We
would hnte to see that iuture shaped by emotional leanings
or ndolcscent predetermmation.
·:-A Fine _ ttitu(le ·;
