The Honor-
Tuesdav's student-led seminar on the topic of "The Honor
~
System'' brought to light one pnrtlculnrly interesting fnct,
that the responsibility for and work conn~ctcd with putting
an honor system into practic~ on this campus rests soll.'ly w1th
the student bod\' . •
This dc.~cs not mean, of cou1 sc. thnt the fncu lty and admin
istration are going to sit 1dly by and allow the ASLC to set up
any system wh1ch iL desires but it docs mean that student mi-
113tive is needed to start the bnll 1 oUing.
Discussion in lhe seminar pomted up two opposing views
on the question. "'\\'111 the honor system work at Lewis and
Clark?" However. both campus agreed thnl the only real test
of the work-ab1lity ot such a system hc1 e would be its instal-
lation. •
this goal but the administration and faculty rcalu:e thnt mere
ly installing the system is no guarantee of its success. The nec
essary ingredient for successful operauon of an honor system
is an earnest desire on the part of the student body to partici-
pate in and work for its success.
Befo1e going any further in the dhection of procuring
such a S\'Stem for Lewis and Clark, we must make certain •
that the largest percentage or, at least1 a large percentage or
the students would be willing to accept the rc.\iponsibility
which the honor system puts upon them. Without that accept-
nee, the .system is doomed to failure.
With H, success might almost be guaranteed.
Help or Heaclnche?
All that Temains of the ''Krazy Karnh•ol ,'' annual ASLC
money-making C\'ening. is .some boards. wrinkled papers and
a slightly sour taste in the mouth ot son1c persons connected
with it.
Howe\ er, the idea of the carnh·al itself, docs not escape so
lightl) Some campus organizations did not enter booths this
year because their experience in the past had been that the
income potential did not justify the risk. the work and the
worry wh1ch went mto construction of their booth or exhibit.
Undoubtedly some of the organizations which did partici
pate, after spending a day and a night w1th hammer, saw and
poster paint only to emerge with profits ranging from five to
ten dollars, fell tfte cause a losing one.
It is, of course, a point lhat the entertainment value of
the event is sufficient to justify its continued ex1stcnce. How
e\•er. before this :is admitted, ll must be pro,·en that a carni
,.al does possess such entertainment \'alue. We rather doubt
that the student body as a whole would even turn out Cor the
event were it not that groups to which they belong ha,·e en
tered booths.
But if such an obJecti\·e analysis of the situation should
corroborate the charges of those Who see the whole effect of
the thing as an annual headache, we certainly suggest aban
donment of the idea.
This young college must prune the dead leaves from
program 11 its growth is to contmue "\\"ith v1gor.

The Honor-
Tuesdav's student-led seminar on the topic of "The Honor
