in student sovernment becomes increasingly
gredt, and the signiFicance of their efforts in
this capacity will continue to grow as long as
the war ldsts.
However, the women this year have carried
on their separate government under the leader

At the beginning of the yedr the mdteridl from the high schools of Portldnd dnd vicinity promised one
of the Finest bdsketbdll tedms in the history of the college. Thdt the tedm fdiled to live up to the expectd
tions of its followers was due in no smdll medsure to the fact thdt the school does not have its own
gymndsium. It WdS necessary for the tedm to prdctice ldte in the evening. This situdtion worked d hardship
on the members of the tedm dnd made the practices that were held more of a drudgery. However, despite
these hdndicaps, the tedm played some excellent games. Mdny of the losses incurred were of the "heart
breaker" variety, taking place in the last seconds of the game. The series with Oregon College of
Educdtion provided perhaps the greatest number of thrills. With the present program of the Army and
the Navy in tdking the boys, it is doubtful whether we will have a team next year. But we Sdlute them
for the magnificence of this year's efforts. Stdndin9: Rdde:mdche:r.

Under the direction of Mrs. Emma B. Meier, the chorus of twenty-five voices this year participated as
usual in the chapel programs and presented its annual Christmas and formal Spring concerts. In addition,
the group sang twice over the radio during the second semester. Outstanding members of the chorus

male quartet have proved to be popular groups at their appearances in the city as well as in our college
programs.

Women hdve alwdys served an importdnt func
tion in college life at Albdny dnd now at
Lewis and Cidrk. Now, as mdny of the men of
the college ledve to join the various branches
of the armed service, the importance of women
in student sovernment becomes increasingly
gredt, and the signiFicance of their efforts in
this capacity will continue to grow as long as
the war ldsts.
However, the women this year have carried
on their separate government under the leader
ship of Elsa Peterson, president of the Asso
