students began streaming onto campus, the
R.A. and N .S.O staffs began working overtime
to make the transition to college easier. Soon
everything was w1derway, from classes to
athletics to student life, the ca1npus was alive
with activity.
The Environmental Studies Syn1posium
drew large crowds of students, faculty, staff
and members of the contmunity. Academically,
students were challenged from day one. Filling
the Watzek Library, everyone seemed to be
studying hard.
For those not on campus, life overseas or
across the country was full of excitement and

his year, as in each year past, scores of bright­
eyed first-year students arrived at LC, full of
enthusiasm and hope for their college careers.
At the same time, we bade farewell to a new class of
seniors, eyes reflecting four years of experience and
a broader awareness of themselves and the world.
Clearly, students were at the h'6ART of the commu­
nity. The student body comprised more than 1,700
individuals, each with a diverse background and
personality. Whether living in the residence halls or
off-campus, students' contributions could be seen
everywhere. These contributions would be remem­
bered and appreciated for many years to come.
From the parking fee debate, to student bands play­
ing in the Rusty Nail or the Plattform, to posts on
the electronic Soapbox, an irresistable and powerful

B roadening one's horizons and expanding
the MINO were high on the priority list for
students. Indeed, it was the primary reason
we had made the ascent up Palatine Hill to the
tree-filled campus that would be our home for four
years. More than 20 majors, overseas progran1s
throughout the world, and the vast opportunities
for research and in-depth study often led to tough
decisions and intense soul-searcl1ing. For whatever
reason we made the journey here, we were united
by a desire to become a part of something greater
than ourselves. Sometimes, it seemed that the term
would never end. But by senior year, time seemed
to have sped by in the blink of eye, which brought
up the question: what comes next?

I t sometimes seemed that the world of athletic~
took a back seat to all the hours of studying.
but the student-athletes who pursued excel­
lence in varsity, intramural, and club sports kne,,
better. Still more students stepped back from the
books and the lectures to participate in College
Outdoors trips. They all proved that the SOtJY
was not being neglected at this college. True suc­
cess in athletics took a fierce determination to dis­
cover the limitless strength within. It was not
enough to simply win, it was also necessary to per­
form your best. Many students who participated in
sports brought what they learned from their gan1e
to their studies. The lessons they learned and the
achievements they made were not only a way of

Having fun and taking time to enjoy life's pleasures
sometimes became a neglected task a1nidst the
whirlwind pace of study. After classes, lectures.
and labs, well-spent leisure activities were dearly wel-
come. Enriching the SOU l as well as the mind led to par­
ticipation in one of the more than 80 student groups, atten­
dance at numerous special events on campus, and creation
of powe1ful and evocative works of ai1. These activities
helped n1aintain our anity and enhanced our academic
experience, allowing us to discover new vistas of thought
and belief. Leaming included not only academics, but also
an awareness of our talents and abilities. In everything we
did, we did with passion and enthusiasm. Leaving our
mark on both the school and the world, we sought ne\\
avenues of expression and meaning to make us truly

With numerous activiticc; and events
planned throughout the year Lewis & Clark
students had little opportunity to be bored.
Several events were held, arousing the
interec;t of the LC community. Students were
able to gain knowledge through events such
as the Health Expo, Environmental Affairs
and Gender Stud1c'i Symposiums. They
wcrc able to listen to speakers discuss topics
such as AIDS, gender, and eating disorders.
They also had the chance to attend a variety
of social events such as dances, sporting
events, and Sunday concerts in the chapel.
Other students favored ativitics such as Drag
Croquet and Casino ight. Whatever their
interests, students can find an event that

During ew Student Orienlcllion Lh~
cverpopu lt1r disco dance wai. once again held in
Tamarack. Due to its success another disco
dance was sponsored by ASLC in November.
Sophomore Jon Bennion expressed his enthusi­
asm about the event, "I saw Michael Ford
dance, that's worth $27,000 right there." Other
new dances offered this ycnr included swing
dances and a salsa dance. One swing dance was
held on I lalloween nighl in Stamm and Am­
nesty International spl>ni.orcd their own ver­
sion downtown at Doublctrec l lotel. For some­
thing a little different the Spani':ih Club held a
Salsa dance in lanuary. Studenls were ,, idelv
accepting of the different events, hoping for

Despite overcast skie::, and endless rain,
sludents kept their spirits up by creating
and participating in many activities. Hal­
loween sparked imagination in many, and
there were a wide variety of costumes
including the popular Spice Girls, and fairy
costumes. Students became animated in
the Black Box and Fir Acres Theatre, enter­
taining us with events such a::, The Dance
Extrnvagan.l.t, Twelfth Night, and Smash.
Students continued to fight off boredom by
altcnding ::.porting events, dances, and
throwing parties. Overall students were
successful in kt•cpi11g it lively.

The 1998-99 school year has been very eventful. Around campus issues such as
parking and fair treatment for the janitors were a big debates. Students and
faculty alike rallied against parking fees, but in spring semester they were
implemented. Similarly, students showed their strong support for the janitors.
Free University was founded, giving students and community members the
!opportunity to take classes on topics such as financing, massage, and mechan-
ics, free of charge.
Around the nation, the Clinton and Monica scandal continued to get publicity,
to the dismay of the American public. John Glenn made a second trip into
space, and Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire hit a record number of home runs.
Lauryn Hill won five grammies and her new album went multi-platinum. In
Portland students attended concerts such as Dave Mathews, Beastie Boys, and
Hole. There's S01nething About Mary, Shakespeare in Love, and Saving Private Ryan
were also must-sees according to many students. Overall the year of '99 was a
