structively change their student government for

The ASLC Executive Council has recently deve­
loped a proposal to reorganize student govern­
ment The proposed reorganzation 1s designed to
streamline. decentralize. and broaden your Invol­
vement wh1le fostenng a maJor new and on-going
thrust toward student Influence in the academ1c
arena wtth parttcular emphasts on the most fun­
damental organizational unit on campus, the aca­
demiC department By restructuring the present
organization to make government more task­
specific, both elected and appotnted students w111
perform well-defined duties in small, workable
comm1ttees toward the goal of more etfectwe representat ion for you. Students wtll also havell'le
chance to wor1< w1th the faculty, enJoying greater
'economtc clout"' to enchance the LCcommunity .
Our Academic Excellence : Rationale for Change
While the present ASLC attempts to solve and
answer contemporary LC academ1c needs, its
structure limtts 1t from doing so. For instance tf
students identtty a weakness 1n their department ,
they may petrtion the department for a course
addition and/or the h1ring of additional faculty
Departments. in general, want to be responsive to
these needs but largely because of time and
money, their responsiveness Is less than ade­
quate. Currently student government provides no
financial and little orgamzattonal support for aca­
demic development , student-faculty research, or
soc1al ennchmen t at a departmental level To
encourage students and faculty to foster higher
levels of Intellectual and personal growth. and to
help butld the academ1c reputation of Lew1s and
Clark, there ts a posttive need forastudentgovem­
ment that acttvely encourages academic
development
Th1s task cannot be ach1eved by the present
ASLC Historically the JUdiCial and executtve
branches at LC have had clearly defined responsi­
bilities. whtle the Senate has contmually tried to
