auention larrl' Olmo,
Dear Mr. Olmo.
We requ~t .1n in~h tigation of the polic)' •nd procedures of the
fin•ncial .1id office at lewi~ and Clark College. We h.a\le rea~on to
believe that the proce~s~ of the financial aid office are di -
crimin.ttory and in \'iolation of Title IX of the Higher Education Act
-Eduution Amendments of 1973.
The bcbic provision read ~;: ''No per~n in the United State '>hall,
on the b<l"''~ of .. ex, be excluded from participation in, be denied
the benefits of, or be subjected to di-.crimination under any
education program or activity reteiving Feder.ll linandal . .. al>)a tance.
lewi~ •nd Ciarlo. receives funds from the Federal government
through College Work Stud)', Educational Opportunity Grants.
.and N.1tional Dlrert Student loan~
II is the policy of lewis and Clark to m.aintaln a 50:50 balance of
men to women students. The Admissions Policy Statement of April
1971 <>tates, .. Efforts shall be made to enroll a fr~hman cla5~ with
.1ppropria te aid to uhle\'e that 50:50 balance, according to Dean
of Admission s Helmuth Bekowies .
Only those freshmen who apply for financial aid .ue considered
)eparateh ucording to their sex. The office maintain~ two
separate lhts -one for women and one for men -when
allouting aid. The basis for awarding financial aid is adm i~sions
point~ which a.re assigned according to high school grade point
.t\'erage, SAT scores. projected college G.P .A. and other criteria.
In order to recei"e the basic financial aid package of 2011., gran I
and 80 "" loan, men need 48 points while ~omen must h.ave SS. If a
wom.1n can afford to attend lewis and Cl.1rk without financial aid
she i~> not discriminated against. But If she needs assist•nce. she
must ha\>e seven more admissions points than a m.1le student to be
con!.idered for the basic aid package .
There are 300 females and m males in this year's fr~hman clas!.
An equal number (105) of freshmen men and women receive aid.
Currently 2CJ.r'b of lewis and Clark students are receiving aid.
No breakdown according to se~ h available lor total students
receiving financial aid. Of the 430 students receiving aid padcages
that include federal funds. 270 are men and 160 are women.
We request that the HEW lnvestig.Jtion not be limited to the
financi.ll aids program at lewis and Clark, but that the entire
in'ititution be reviewed in terms of .1dmir;sions policy, hiring and
retention, and the applicability of Executive Order 11246 to the
College. We ask that your investigation be initiated .u soon as
pcw.ible alter the beginning of winter term in January.

Rick Cooper
Staff writer
\II '\merrcan Boy, a firs1 solo anempt by Rick Derringer .
For those of you ~ho have no idea who Rick Derringer is, he wu
last seen playing wrth Edgar Winter's group, and has been seen
also with Johnny Winter and a list of others too long to number.
His raspy lead guitar style on Frankenstein has won him at leMt a
)hado" of popularit y with the top-40 age group who listen to
KISN, or worse yet, KGW. Edgar, by the way, appears with Rick on
this album in spotSi along with Joe Walsh and many more assorted
talenh.
The cover of this album may require some explanation ... and 1
don't ha.ve ~ny. ~t looks like David Bowie in a space suit, or Alice
Cooper rn hts paJamas, only he's holding a guitar. But whichever It
looks like, it is Rick Derringer, and he is a fine musician. David and
Aile~ I happe~ to respect more as entertainer s, although
Dernnger doesn t do a bad job on stage himself. Some of you may
have ~een him with Edgar Winter'~ group when they were in
Portland two years ago; I personally thinlc he made the whole
~how . The hell with Edgar.
The album starts oH with a really tight jazz-rock feeling In a song
entitled Rock and Roll Hootch1e l<oo Its rhythm pa;tern and
heavy bea~ s.ound ~l~ost reminiscent of an early led Zeppelin
album But tt rs an ortgrnal song and it does have a nice feel. A few
song~ later. I was surprised with one entitled II\ Rammg, no
rc-latson to Oregon weather. I was surpri~ed because of its
somewhat mellower approach . It really sounded nice compared
to )Ome of the rock I hear on the radio these day~. And it wa(i a nice
C?ntra'lit to some of Derringer's preceding tune). ll's ~omethingl
dtdn't quite expect from an artist usually associclted with watts and
dt>dbels; nevertheless, the song do~ put acros!. a very soothing
sound.
If it's not too early to make a conclusion about All Amcriccm
Boy, you. decide for yourself. I really liked It; it showed a lot of
good ~oltd rock, and a lot of well-tempered blues; ,, combination
tha.t~ohould plea.~e the ears of just about everyone. Give the album
a h~ten on your favorite FM station, if it hasn't already come
ar?und. lt'll be on in pieces for quite awhile anyway ... you can't
mr~s it.

auention larrl' Olmo,
Dear Mr.

Rick Cooper

Give the album
a h~ten on your favorite FM station, if it hasn't already come
ar?und. lt'll be on in pieces for quite awhile anyway ... you can't
mr~s it.
