Today, November 5. as a day often sorely slighted. The
n~·erage student upon being aroused from his stupor m the
shack and asked: •'What, pray tell, is significant about today,
November 5?", would probably cock a sleepy eyebrow nnd
mumble in a deep monotone.
"Humnnittes test, overdue book, wanna lock up, free
coffee, Be Kind to Poor Teachers Week?"
lt would be a chance fo1· us to sneer knowingly .. nd inform
Lhis poor m1si1t that today. FJ"idny, November 5. 1s the three
hundred and iorty-nmth annh·crsary of Guy F.-.wkcs day!
On November 5. 1605, Guy Fawkes and n bunch of his
pals sallied forth jnto the London sewers with se\·eral tons
of dynamite and tried unsuccessfully to blow up Parliament.
For some per\'erted reason, the British nation has celebrated
this occasion ever since.
Perhaps we could celebrate Guy Fawkes day on the LC
campus in place of Homecoming. There would be no need of
a parade, football game, dance, alumni dinners and float
building. It would also provide an excellent release for stu
dents' pent-up enthusiasm and would also rid the campus of
old, decrepit buildings. The only drawback would be an ~
cessive turnoYer of faculty and the difficulty of procuring
such large amounts of dynamite.
