As Fumbles Prove Margin
BY TOM HARTLEY
The Pioneers' attempt to knock the crown from the head
of the defending champs, College of Idaho, was unsuccess ful
as the Orange and Black came out on the short end of a 14-7
count Saturdav at Caldwell •
Once agam the Coyotes proved their supremacy on their
home field as the vtsalors lost 60 yards, ''la the penalty route.
Se\"en fumbles also hurt the Palatine hill crew as they in
vaded Cald\\'ell for their first league encounter as well as
the f1rst mght contest of the infant season.
After a see-saw first half the hosts pushed ov~r the first
score with but sbc seconds remaining in the second qunrter.
A 20-yord pass from qu;uterback Bob Slolm to end Bill Kun
dJ·at in the end zone on which interference was called gave
the Coyotes the ball on the one-yard lmc.. Sloan sn~aked over
and R. C. Owens con,·erted to send Coach Joe Huston's
boys to the intermission trailing 7-0.
The Sloan to Kundrat combination accounted for the
C of I second tally w1th Jess than two minutes in the second
holf. The Coyotes took the opening k]ck-off and drove to the
19 )'&rd line where Sloan's pass ended the march with a TD
Owens agam booted the extra point. '
The Pioneers closed out the night scoring in the same
pt'riod as quarterback Jimmy Johnson pushed across from
the two to cap a 55-yard d1 ive. Gene Flippin converted
Shortly after 1ls score LC lost the sct·viccs of Johnson ns he
left the gnme with an injured leg. Ron Stemple moved into
the quarterback slot to finish the evenmg, but the ac.rinl
game suffered ns the visitor completed only one pnss in ninl'
attempts. The defending champs chalked up nine bulls-eyes
m l 4 l r1cs. Both clubs had 15 Iirsl downs.
''Fumbl!htus'' was almost llS big a factor us pcnallics as
the PioncC!rs "bobbled" twice inside ld;tho's 20 yard line.
Five times miscues cosl LC the possesston nf the ball.
