pro\·c to be h1ghly unpopular bccau~c it is nimcd at sapping
the t:'ncrgacs of tbco indivtdunl student body member through
a process called thought.
For the st>l~tion of student body officers plays a great
p3rt m determining the SUCC'Css which the 1\SLC, both m its
orgnn•z~lional sense and m its eHcct upon Ute students, will
CllJO~ conte the 1953-M college year.
We do not mean to unply that those students nominated in
prov1ous years ha\i c been incompetents. Whal we do seek is
a "idcr mtcrest in elecuons, a more thorough consideration
of prospecb\'C cand1dates and an obJeCtive analySis of pcr-
ons qualif1ed !or such of[ices m hopes thnt all able persons
wtll be nommnted.
It may be a bat early to set off the campus poliltcal fm~
\\ orks but we feel that 1t is none too soon to begm beating the
bushes 1n search of those best nble to guide the ASLC through
the commg year.
Student government should be more th a h\•o-weck con-
f.Jdcration. Politics. to be effective, are a year-round job.

\\ c recently receJVed a note from Dr Odell in wJ1ich lte
enclosed a letter !rom a resident of Southwest Terwilli~c.r
eAte.nslon suggesting a renewed stress on safe-driving habits
lor LewlS and Clark students.
Dr. Odell thought tl1at, perhaps. we might comment on the
Sltuntion and we agree that some comment is due. Not that
~ e .are gomg to condemn '"speed-crazy" youth :for 1Ls ~cc.kless
n ; \\ e are, rather. only going to suggest the use of reason
v. lulc drh1ng and a sane set of rood habits.
Probably we drive too fast ourselv·es at tunes but we nl
wavs try to use some discretion and mamtain safety. A citi
zen's re.sponstbtlity to look out for others docs not cease be
hind the wht..:.cl of an automobile.
Still another way of looking at the sttunUon is gh•cn by the
wnter of Ute letter to Dr. Odell, whtclt has been mentioned
c3rlier. We rather m·e this pointed comment:
"There arc so many fine potenlinl leaders attending your
co1lege-\\ c'd like to see Lhem all grow up to fuUill their
destiny."

pro\·c to be h1ghly unpopular bccau~c it is nimcd at sapping
the t:'ncrgacs of tbco indivtdunl student body member through
a process called thought.

"There arc so many fine potenlinl leaders attending your
co1lege-\\ c'd like to see Lhem all grow up to fuUill their
destiny."
