It 1sn't often that we have opportumty to Sll back ond
plny the part of sage, old ngc so we hope you wtll CJ cus~ our
mnkmg the most o[ it. At any rate, all this talk about m·
creased demands of the armed .services, drnftmg :;tudcnts and
the like lans an air o[ familiarity about it.
T.hose of us \\'ho were in college in. th\.' summer of 1950-
thc time of the outbreak of hosl.ilities m Korcu-slill recnll
those fc"lings of doubt and unccnmnLy about the ruture
wluch were tlten so strong in our minds. There wen.• rumot'S
thnt all men in the 19-26 age group would be induct~d imme
diately that C'Ollege students would not be defcrrt!d .......some
belic,·ed these rumors and flocked to the enlistment offaccs.
They were, occordmg to the recruiting offiet'rs nnd thc1r o~vn
ratlonnliz.atJon, beating the draft. We cannot argue that pomt
for we are sllll m college nnd they have been three years in
the mllitan. We must admit that they "beat" us. w~ do not,
w
h0\"1: e\'e.f, adm1t that they are better off.
Fnr from 1t, for we are now able to look nt the future-
though se.lecU\•c sen~ce still stares us in the :!ace--with n
sort of calm resoluuon. lt lS no longer the frightemng spectre
1t once wns: the combmation 01 time, reflection nnd, most of
all, the college CJ>:perience has strengi.hcnl!d our fa1th m our
selves so that we may now !nee the future witlt('lut fcnr.
Consequently, we 11old-timers'' sadly shake our heads when·
ever we see a promising student drop his studie!S for a mili·
tnry cruec.r:. A hasty dec1sion to enlist bnngs to mind a phrase
spolten by John of Gaunt in Shakespeare'~ Richard 11. "Things
sweet to taste," says he. "pro\'C in digestion sour.''
Those of us who haYe ridden out lhe post·Korc:m tide of
uncertainty still feel fit both of mind and stomach.
Titn For on1e l 0'11 '"" ~ ... <._;
From nll the talent available on this campus, we sometimes
v; onder wh!f 1t is not possible to avoid displaying signs which
appear to have come from the brush of some second-grade
arllsl. In fnct, we ha\•e been wondermg why this condition
should exist ever since enrolling at Lewis and Clark.
Two prime examples of this lack of print·talent hnve been
apparent n cnmpus recently; the first being the WSSF signs
on the sandwich board in front o{ the gymnas1um and the
second, in the lobby of the gym, the board mdicating the re
served and general admission sections.
•
We iecl sure that anv students who have seen these two ex-•
amples will agr-ee \\'ith our point of view. The primary con·
sideration now is to find a wny to allc\'late th1s condition.
We would suggest a committee, under student body juris·
d1ct.ion, which would act as coordinator of nll s1gn-pamting
activity on campus as well as n source of talent for doing
the actual work.
Such a committee would not only answer requests from
nny group on campus for s1gns but wouJd also draw from n
pool of artists to paint those signs. Perhaps some other solu
tion could be worked out which would be more satisfactory to
nll concerned.
We do not care b\' what means the matter is handled. What ..
we are interested m is in provlCiing students with more legible
announcements and outsiders with a more adult impression
of the campus.

Fnr from 1t, for we are now able to look nt the future-
though se.lecU\•c sen~ce still stares us in the :!ace--with n
sort of calm resoluuon. lt lS no longer the frightemng spectre

all, the college CJ>:perience has strengi.hcnl!d our fa1th m our
selves so that we may now !nee the future witlt('lut fcnr.
Consequently, we 11old-timers'' sadly shake our heads when·
ever we see a promising student drop his studie!S for a mili·

spolten by John of Gaunt in Shakespeare'~ Richard 11. "Things

uncertainty still feel fit both of mind and stomach.
