Thi.s l5 ibe first of a sarles of LOG odltorlalt to dool with
the moral and spiritual lmplielltloru. of an honor system at
Lewl& and Clark. Future l.r...uos of the LOC will contaln also
fads u to lhc nature of honor systom~ and roports of bow it
has worked at othor &choolt.
Whut nrc :the objections to the estabhshmcnl of nn honor
syst~m on this campus? Boiled down, they amount to one
lhmg. the claim that students lack personal hono1 systems ... without which ~uch o program could nl)l pos ibly uccced on 3
college-wide basi~.
We fmd 1t impossible to reconcile such n lack of personal
integraty with any ktnd of n bellc.f in the ideals nnd principles
of tlu~ college. If we are to bear tht:' name ·•christian college"
then we bellc\'e Jt as llmc for the students to do something
tov. ard earning 1t. We hn,·c yet to see the student body of
this college, actmg 3.S a whole, £' ·tend themselves to promote
those ideals of I~~wis and Clark to wh1ch they ha,·c nll sub
scrabcd m writing.
lf 1t were the faculty and adminstrntion alone "ho feared
thnt the students on this campus could not succl~~s- futlv op
erate under an hllnor S\"stcm in cxammnhons, wo should not
~
be so worncd. What bothers u:-is the wad~.sp1~ad beliel
among the students thnt they could not resist till• temptations
or ncccpt the responsibihly of carrying out such a program. PIONEER LOG

We belic"e the student body of thts college must be put to
the test. Js it re..·llly a '1Christian" student body or docs it
me~ely pay lip sen·ice to that ideal?
The time for action is now. Those who hav~ fatth in this
college and in those spiritual forces upon wh1ch !>he leans, will
not listen to any objeet.Jons.
They know that if this sludt?nt body wants an bonor svs-• •
tern to work here, they shall hr1\·e it.
A Wa te of Tinle
We are firm bclie,•ers in that old adage, ''lf a thing is worU1
doing, it is worth doing well " This would seem to be particu
larly applicable to the monthly departmental seminars if the
results of the weekly Pioneer poll are to be given any con
sideration.
We have long felt that these meelings, on lhe whole, are
largely disorganized and of little \'alue to the students attend
ing. Our com·ictions are bolstered by the fact that the stu
dent opinion sampled was highly critical of the present way
in which the seminars arc being handled.
The core of the problem seems to be twofold; first, many
department heads are incapable ot leading interesting semi
nars because it requires a different technique from that gen
craHy used in the classroom and, secondly, n great many of
the instructors in charge of seminars are either too busy or
too little concerned with the whole bu~iness to make an honest
attempt at preparation.
1f the faculty is too overworked to Ulke care of this duty
satisfactorily, and we have reason to believe thnt some of its
members are, then Lhe program should be given into new
hands. If new hands nrc unavailable, then we would suggest
that the program be dropped.
lt is an excellent idea to gather students together according
to their interests and to d1scuss and investigate problems per
taining to these interests. We could thoroughly 3pplaud such
a meeting but we cannot see any JUStification for merely wast
ing the student's time.

We belic"e the student body of thts college must be put to
the test. Js it re..·llly a '1Christian" student body or docs it
me~ely pay lip sen·ice to that ideal?
The time for action is now. Those who hav~ fatth in this

not listen to any objeet.Jons.
They know that if this sludt?nt body wants an bonor svs-• •
