There is one aspect or Bob's life among us which I would like to underline .
It seems that it must have been part of God's phm that Christ should die at 33. His mis·
sion had been fu)hlled. I like to think that Bob hnd n mission and that it was at least par
tiallv fulfilled. • He moved 3mong us. known to and beloved by all of us, likes lambent £lame bestowing
cht•er and gladness upon us all When we were giving our little dollars for his special chair
we were laying at his feet token trtbutes of out· esteem and affectton. And that m us did us
collectively more ~ood than it d1d hm1 His devoted fraternity , too, was spiritually the bet
ter Cor his presence.
1 {eel mhnttcly sorry for h1s falhe1. For veats he cat·cd for even in inltmate physical
details-his motherless child Now his hie is leil with n void. Perhaps if the father could
know what his son d1d for his college and for the hundreds oi students who knew him, he
might feel better. Could ::;omeone tell him?
To nil Bob was a smile and glad word. But to tho!>e \\ ho knew him best these were not
onlv outward ""mbols but also a manifestation o( his mdomitable forhtude Beneath all
~ -
that lay, well concealed and rigidly disciplined, a ~adness and a frustration Once he ~id
to me: ''Every normal young man wants two things: to have o job which g1ves him work
satisfaction nnd to marry One of these was forever denied him. The other, he was, with
the cooperation of the col cge authorities and of the students who adored him, on the way
to achic,•ing. Yet he had deep misgivings aboout even that objective.
It is for us, the Ji,•ing and the whole, to re-dedicate ourselves to selfless service lo our
ft..>llow-men who need us. In such a consecration, Bob Lacanale, like a bright, clear unshift
ing star, will be set in the hca\·ens of our memories , a Polaris or our highest asp1rations.

And that m us did us
collectively more ~ood than it d1d hm1 His devoted fraternity , too, was spiritually the bet
ter Cor his presence.

details-his motherless child Now his hie is leil with n void. Perhaps if the father could
know what his son d1d for his college and for the hundreds oi students who knew him, he
might feel better. Could ::;omeone tell him?
To nil Bob was a smile and glad word. But to tho!>e \\ ho knew him best these were not
onlv outward ""mbols but also a manifestation o( his mdomitable forhtude Beneath all

that lay, well concealed and rigidly disciplined, a ~adness and a frustration Once he ~id
to me: ''Every normal young man wants two things: to have o job which g1ves him work
satisfaction nnd to marry One of these was forever denied him.
