"These are some of Josephs ponies drinking. Josephs nephew Ni[c]ky Mowits, He is now Cool-cool-smool-mool and usualy I drive them from off the hills every morning to water, see that they are all there and catch new ones to ride after them the next day' (EW, 1893) "The water hole was the most convenient place to lasso them, which was our only means of catching them" (EW, later note). "Nespilem - 1893 or '94 Dragging steers, that had just been shot, out of the corrals. These were furnished by the Government for meat. Indian furthest to right is Nicky Mowitz, my boy companion, and some sort of nephew or relation to Joseph - probably by marriage." (EW, later note.)
