"These are some of Josephs ponies drinking. Josephs nephew Ni[c]ky Mowits, He is now Cool-cool-smool-mool and usualy I drive them from off the hills every morning to water, see that they are all there and catch new ones to ride after them the next day' (EW, 1893) "The water hole was the most convenient place to lasso them, which was our only means of catching them" (EW, later note). See EW journal entry for 6 October 1893: "Visited my traps and then I took my camera and went down to the watering places of the horses and took some pictures of the ponies when they came in . . . ."
