The Pioneer Log is the student run newspaper of Lewis & Clark College. It is a bi-weekly publication and currently celebrating it’s 75th year in print. Pictured here are the members of the Pio staff from 1947.

The Pioneer Log

When the college relocated to the Fir Acres estate in 1942 the student paper did not have a name. Instead, it was simply titled “First Edition.” The paper considered options for a new name, including “The Explorer,” “The Trail-Blazer,” and the “Tom Tom.” Several issues later, editorial staff decided on Pioneer Log, often shortened by students to “the Log.”

The first issue reflects a time of hardship, and in an open letter to students, President Morgan S. Odell addressed these concerns:

We enter a new experience together in a year which would be naturally difficult because of our new campus but which is doubly difficult because of the great stress of war into which our nation has been plunged. Such a year will demand courage, patience, understanding, and a willingness to work together in order to achieve the goals of good scholarship and personal development set before each one of us.
