10 P r e s i d e n t' s Message
Each of us began the path of life with whatever degree
of comfort, security and opportunity our accident of birth
conferred.. Some have always had the best of health, of
care, of status and of personal gifts. For su~h the path of
life has been easy and pleasant. For others the la:k of
one or more gifts of birth has often made the way tortorous
and too steep.
Col!ege years provide a quiet and generous time for
individual growth for the hard roads ahead. The handi­
caps of birth are dropped in o just commcinity as ihe able
and the vigorous forge ahead, and even the weak are
given due care.
Life in Lewis and Clark is designed to furnish each one
with vislon and judgment to seek the better path, with
knowledge and skill to overcome adventitious difficulties,
with courage and fellowship, and with faiih in God for
confidence along unknown ways. May our experience
here of joy and peace and love be so deep as to s:;ffice for
all our days upon the path of life.

ASLC President Bill Owen conducted his
campa.ig.n on a platform of stude.nt govern­
ment by the students, and his term was filled
with work on a more truly representative type
of student government,
An independent, Bill has w.orked for
gre.ater student-faculty understanding and
great.er student inte.rest in on-campus activ­
ities both academi.c and social. Under his
2:4 influ.ence the student council attacked the
problems of streamlining the constitution, im­
proving campus elections, and cornpili ng o
list of the student commissioners' dvties,
Through Bill's efforts there have been
more harmoniovs grovp relations between the
students ond tihe agencies of stvdent govern­
ment. Right hand man to the student body president is
Vice President John Pavl Jones. Besides presiding
over student council meetings in the absence of the
president, he is the overseer of student organizations
·and the man who sees that commissioners and student
groups file activity and business reports.
Student body secretary Betty Lake is the girl who
keeps the records of ASLC proceedings and carrie., on
student body correspondence.
Money man Jim Gar.rett prepares the bvdget for
aJI student body activities, checks receipts and dis­
bursements of student funds and submits financial
reports and statements in the o.ffi.ci·o.l capacity of ASLC
trea~urer. But Jim also attained honor for l and C
when he wos el.ected president of the Oregon Federa­
tion of College Leaders.

ASLC Student Body Commissioners
These six commis.sioners, appointed by the
ASLC president with vice-presidentia.l .aid, con­
stitute the machinery which carries student gov­
ernment into effect.
School spirit is a prerequ1s1te to the post of
Activities <;ommissioner, held by Jack Bastine.
Jo.ck is responsible for infra-mural athletics, stu­
dent body assemblies, rallies and on-campus
meetings.
Gene Arvidson as Elections commissioner 1s
genera.I supervisor and direclor of all campaign
programs. Th.is yeor he put out sample ballots
for the students before elections. Public Rela­
tions commissioner George Marandas authorizes
s.igns and coordinate.s public.ity for student body
26 fu ncfions. He was also instrumental in organiz­
ing the weekly LC radio program over KXL
Ann Granning, Social commissioner, makes
the decision on dotes for social functions, as well
as being generally responsible for all social func­
tions and rules and regulations regarding them.
Tom O'Day, Publications commissioner, gets the
credit for the smooth functioning of the various
campus publicatiqns. He is concerned With the
budgets for the publications and is responsible
for ascertaini.ng student and faculty opinion re-
garding the publications.

Fleet is responsible for coordinating activities
pertaining to religious, cultural, international
and social services .. Student Body Council

new students with Lewis and
Clark, the Pathfinder is aimed
at aiding them in developing
the pioneer spirit.
The Pathfinder contains in­
formation about the college,
traditions, organizations, reg­
ulations and government. (It's
the one place on campus
where the LC constitution can
be found.) In the late sum­
mer it is mailed to all new
students to give them o pre­
view of the "path of life" at
lewis and Clark college.

The Pioneer Guide is o student-faculty directory
published every year by Pi Delta Epsilon jour­
nalism honorary, This year the Guide was edited
by Solly Skinner and Tom O'Doy, Credit for the
advertising goes to Marv Evans and Bob Devin,
Advertisements covered the cost of publication
and the proceeds from sales financed two jour­
nalism scholarships for L & C freshmen.
MS.
MS., student literary magazine was instituted on
campus this year as o project sponsored by the English
club. The magazine was designed to provide a medium
for the publication of creative writing by student writers.
Edited by Don Kearns, the three issues of Volume One
contained stories, poems, articles and critiques by
students in many departments of the college.

The 1952-53 LOG adhered to a policy
of unsensational but thorough news cover­
age and timely but thoughtful editorials­
in a word, a sort of "collegiate cons·erva•
tism."
Operating under the belief that the only
measure of a newspaper is its value to the
community which it serves, the editorial
staff sought to emphasize and promote
those values whi-ch are the ideals of the
college as a whole.
Sports editor Tom O'Day was lost to
the army in mid-year, and managing editor
Charles Charnquist moved in to fill the g<;ip.
The LOG finished the year in good standing
with students, faculty and administration.
This consumer sentiment, the editors feel,
is the true test of any product.

Inter-Sorority Council
Completing a project started la.st ye.or, the
Council furnished silverware for Stewart Hall.
Teaming up with the Inter-Fraternity Council
it sponsored an all-Greek dance, "A Night in
Athens."
Every year the Council awards the scholar­
ship cu.p to the sorority with the highest
grade point averoge. This year it sponsored
a barbecue and folk dancing for fre.shmen
during orientation days.

nator of sorority activities and lays out plans
for rushing activities. It is composed of two
representa.tives and the president from each
sorority.
This year the Council numbers among its
activites a Coffee Hour for prospective .rushe.es

132 In 1952 the Pioneer gridders receipted for
the poorest season in the history of football
at lewis and Clark. After a narrow one­
point loss to University of Hawaii in the sea­
son opener, Head Coach Joe Huston's men
walloped Whitman 33-7 and it looked as
if they were on their way.
But the Missionaries were the only eleven
LC could chalk up in ,the win co'lumn for Lin­
field, College of ldalilo, Willamette and Pa­
cific eoch then rolled over the Pioneers in,
turn and the Orange wound up in fifth place

In the final game of the year lewis and
Clark dropped a thriller 21 -1 8 to Idaho
State in one of Multnomah stadium's best
games of the year.
Witl;i little to cheer about in the loop
standings, the individual efforts of Bud Cox,
Jim Smith and Neil Andersen on the ground,
and Dick Voll in trne air, were the highlights
of foo,tboll talk during the year.
Cox was recognized as one of the top
performers in the conference for his all­
around ability as a line-backer. He was
selected on the Littl'e All-Coast team as well
as the All-Conference eleven.

140 Cooch Eldon Fix's cagers, after a slow start, finally
found themselves and powered their way to the
1952-53 Northwest conference basketball champion­
ship, winning the crown with a heart-stopping victory
over Willamette on the last night of the season.
As the league season opened, the Pioneers, crip­
pled by injuries, lost two to College of Idaho, then
beat Whitman on their eastern jaunt and, with a
deficit in the standings, the future looked dim for
Fix's men.
But the Pioneers caught fire and overran the con­
ference from there on, walloping Pacific, dropping
an overtime contest to the Badgers, smacking Un­
field three times and defeating Willamette in the
eagerly-awaited first contest between the two pre-season pic'ks for the championship. The cagers
nipped Pacific in another overtime tiff, lost to Whit­
man, trounced the Missionaries the next night,
banged College of Idaho and split the final two­
game series with Willamette.
Winning the NW conference championship en­
titled the Pioneers to a try at the District 2 NAIB play­
offs but the tired hoopmen were defeated by Oregon
college the first night and edged in a double-over­
time donnybrook by Willamette the second.
Junior Forward Ken Servos and Senior Center John
Fuez were the outstanding paintmakers for the LC
team. Servos, judged one of the top players in the
conference, averaged a top-rate 16.5 points and
14.8 rebounds per game.

Coach Al Akins' junior varsity basketball
squad, by the scoreboard, hod a seemingly
poor season, but the scoreboard didn't tell the
whole story. The jayvees won 6 and lost 13 for
the year, a .316 average, but five of their de­
feats were by three points or less.
In the conference, LC won two of three from
Willamette and lost three each to Linfield and
Pacific. Other wins were over Reed, Oregon
Dental, Multnomah School of Bible and the
Electro-Mechanics, a Portland city team. The squad seemed to strengthen near the
end of the season, winning four of its last six
contests, including a near-century mark of
94-67 over Reed.
Les Swain, Fred Greatwood and Harold
Nolf were the men who carried the greatest
part of the scoring burden, with Tom Hogg and
Al Scott in close support. Swain, the point
leader, averaged better than 12 per game and
hit the season highs of 22 and 20 counters in

TRACK
Caley Cook, Reider Heller and Neil Ander­
sen spearheaded the LC track team to a suc­
cessful year as the Pioneers finished second to
Willamette in the NW conference meet at Wallo
Walla after winning three of five regular season
contests.
Coac:h Eldon Fix's men started the season
with a loss to a powerful Oregon State squad,
then captured a six-way tiff with Pacific, EOCE,
OCE, Portland State and Clark JC and dual AND FIELD
meets with Linfield and Portland. Willamette
nipped the cindermen in the windup test.
Caley Cook took three first places in the
conference meet for high point honors and
wound up the season with 90 points. Next be­
hind Cook were Heller with 48 ½ and Andersen
with 46 ½. Other leading scorers were Fran
Cox, Don McCollum, Will Stephens, Jim Smith,
Ron Carmichael, Milt Schroeder and Lorry
Havercamp.

The Pioneer baseballers, despite a mediocre
conference record, placed three men, Pitcher
Chuck Bonando, Third Baseman Dave Daniels
and Outfielder John Gordon, on the All-Confer-
ence nine.
Coach Warren Smith's squad finished the
loop season in fourth place with a 4 and 6
mark and the year with a slightly better 15
won and 1 5 lost. E B A L L
first Baseman Ron Lewis topped the bats­
men at the plate with a solid .357 average
which included nine doubles, a triple and 18
runs batted in. On the mound the "big arm"
was Bonando, who piled up five victories
against only two defeats.
Lewis, Catcher Bill Martell and Utility In­
fielder Dick Tydeman, a four-year baseball
letterman, were named to the All-Conference
mention list.

Red-headed Bruce Forsythe in a reverse
shoulder turn, A rapidly growing ski team and ski class has raised
skiing to a position of major importance at LC.
The team suffered heavy losses to Uncle Sam and to
accidents. Barney Becker stepped into fill Don Case's
coaching job when he was recalled to active duty. Frank
Reed left a big hole in the team when he joined the
paratroopers.
Second semester brought Jim Angland from Sun
Valley but he crashed in a meet at Stevens Pass and
suffered a compound spiral fracture. One can still find
him plastered from hip to foot. Jack Rayborn dislo­
cated his shoulder and Don Lowe injured his leg which
left the team short footed for the rest of the season.
Irv Jones, Bruce Forsythe, Bob Fergison and
Jack Rayborn brought the team in second in the
three way college meet won by Portland U. OSC finished
in the basement.
Keith Burns took over the class instruction second
semester. Enrollment in the classes this year was at an
all time high.
Ron Lewis, member of the Ski Potrol, displays the form that

took the intramural team plaque.

Formed this winter as a complement to the
Mothers' Club, the Pioneer Pops started off
their activities with a contest to design a mem­

recital. The music department has been in the spot­
light continuously during the year. The choir made
the longest trek in its history, venturing as far
south as San Francisco during a ten-day tour over
spring vacation.
The Oregonian carried a special two-page
spread by its critic, Hilmar Grohndahl, in a Su-nday
issue, commentnig on the remarkable development
the departmen,t has made under John Stark Evans.
To top the good news, announcement was
made, during the year, of the new music building
to be erected by the reflection pool at a cost of
$300,000.

In the planning stage for over a year, the new
baseball diamond was ready for use this spring.
A huge gulley, visible in the first picture, had
to be filled in, trees had to be razed and drainage
pipes laid.

RADIO GUILD
Under the direction of Mary Ellerby, the radio
guild this year produced a dramatization of "Win­
nie the Pooh".

The local chapter of Pi Kappa Delta, notional
