• FROM THE PRESIDENT
Some colleges are concerned with
being known as intellectual centers.
Some seem to be most interested in athletics.
Others arc content to be country clubs.
Some desire to be known as the home of the arts.
Some are strong for a particular type of religion,
and some are mainly vocational in nature,
Lewis and Clark College holds that all of thcs<'
various interests arc good but that they must all
be maintained in balance so that no one
destroys the others.
While we have deep concern for the development
of the mind and the spirit because of
our character as a Christian college. we are
interested here in the growth of the whole person.
We hope that through association with
administrators, faculty members and fellow student,;,
through study of our rich heritage, and through
labor in the activities of the college,
Lewis and Clark students may each become caught
by some vision of greah1ess.
We would have them seek for themselves the
realization of an inquiring and logical mind,
a faith that is intelligently Christian.
citizenship that is human<' and responsible,
happy human relations and usdul work, and an
appreciation of the best in man's artistic and
scientific achicvemC'nts.
This realization of some greatness is the motivating
force in the dream which trustees. faculty,
students, alumni and friends have for this colle~r.
The Voyageur does well to call attention to
the rich resoun.·es prc-scnt at Lewis and Clark
for the achievement of this end.

The Pioneers opened the '54 grid season at Palatine Hill and
were soundly thr~hed b) a rugged, well-drilled Bobcat squad.
Caley Cook. stellar senior halfback, kept the Hustonmen in
the contest with several long dashes. His beautiful 57-yard sprint
in the third quarter provided LC's only TD.
The game was closer than the score would indicate; but costlv
mistakes, caused by only a few days· practice, hurt the gridders. LC 7
COLLEGE OF IDAHO 14
Plagued by fumbles, injuries an<l penalties, the Pioneers drop­
ped their first league encounter to the strong Coyotes of Cald­
well.
A pass interference penalty against LC set up the first Idaho
score six seconds before the halftime gun. The Coyotes struck
through the air to pay dirt two minutes into the thfrd period
to lead 14-0.
Jim Johnson capped a 55-yard drive with a 2-yard romp
into the end zone in the same stanza. Johnson joined the injury
list shortly after. and the Pioneer hopes faded. The gridders
twice lost the ball on fumbles inside the Idaho 20-yarcl line. A
total 125 yards was assessed in penalties against LC while a
mere 5 was charged to the Coyote dub.

at Ellensburp; with n harcl-carncd 14-13 conquest.·
The brilliant Caley Cook ran 19 yards to a TD for the Pio­
neers in the first quarter. Central recovered a fumble on the LC
onr and quickly tied the score early in the second period. A little
later Ron Stemple sne:tkcd across from two yards out, and Gene
Flippen converted to put the Pioneers ahead M-7 at halftime. A
blocked punt set up the second Central score, but the conversion
failed.
Trailing 14-13 Central drove to a first down on the LC one­
yard line>. \Vith onlv seconds remaining, the Pioneers were not
to be denied and held out for four downs to preserve the victory.

PORTLAND ST ATE 19
The backfield of the Pioneers had a field day as the gridmen
romped over Portland State.
Frankie Fair raced 30 and 73 yards to pay dirt for the first
two Pioneer scores. After Jim Smith rambled 13 yards for the
third score, center Ralph Staley intercepted a pass on the PSC
30 and scampered across to give the hosts a 25-0 lead at inter­
mission.
Engebretson opened the third period by bulling over from
the one-foot line. Flippen closed out the scoring with touchdown
sweeps of 2 and 1 yards.
Fair, playing only half the game, gained 148 yards against
the Vikings. LC 21
LINFIELD 14
A stirring second half comeback, sparked by quatterback Jim
Johnson, featured the Pioneers' victory over the Wildcats at
Mc~finnville.
Trailing 7-0 at the half, the Orange and Black struck for three
consecutive scores in the next fifteen minutes. Frankie Fair
raced 45 yards to set up Earl Engebretson's TD smash from a
yard out to tie the scor,•. \1in11tes later a fair-to-Flippen pass
covered 40 yards and put LC ahead to stay. Johnson then took
command and capped a 70-yard drive by scampering 16 yards to
pay dirt. Flippen converted for the third time. The Cats nar­
rowed the margin on a pitchout interception, but the sh1bbom
Pioneer line thwarted any Linfielcl hopes for the lying score.
Halfback Caley Cook suffered a broken leg in the encounter
and was lost to the team for the remainder of the season.

displayed real class in an impressive performance at Griswold
Stadium.
Falfback Flippen accounted for nine points in the first period.
He blasted a 26-ynrd field goal to give the Pioneers a 9-0 inter­
mission bulge•. A Johnson-to-Enp;ebretson aerial in the third
period made it 1 0. Another smash for six by Engebretson was
sandwiched between two TD's bv Willamette's Bob Zoelcb to
~h•e the Pion('ers their victorv. ,
,. A fast, hard-chargin~ line and relentless attack highlighted
the Pionet>rs' fifth straight win.

The Pioneers proved rough hosts as they clobbered the Mis­
sionaries on a muddv field
The gridders sparked by Johnson and Engebretson, marched
8 yards from the opening kickoff with big Earl crashing over
from the nine. Johnson raced 58 yards through the Whits for
the second score. '\fter 'Whitman scored six. Fair danced 15
yards and Flippen made his third straight conversion to l!'.ive
the Pioneers a 21-6 margin at the half.
. The second half featured a 72-yard sustained drive by the
Pioneers with Engebretson plunging for his second TD from the
two. The other easy victory was highlighted by the stellar play
of the Lewis and Clark linemen.

The Pioneers' seventh straight victory was a big one as they
clinched a Northwest conference co-championship with Wil­
lamette and College of Idaho.
The contest was never close. In the first period Engebretson
smashed to six points after Al Scott recovered a fumble on the
Pacific 3-l. Dean Soule rambled 45 yards to pay dirt \vith an
intercepted Badger pass to score again. With 30 seconds left in
the half, Everett recovered a bobble on the Pacific 13, and
Flippen booted a 23-yard 3-pointer.
Early in the last period Bill Stemple grabbed another Pacific
fumble on the opposition's 19, and a Smith-to-Flippen pass gave
the powerful Pioneers their final margin.

A bevy of seniors ended their football careers for LC in a
blaze of glory before the hometo"vn fans.
Two of them, Jim Smith and Jim Quick accounted for five
of the six touchdowns. Smith traveled 38. 13 and 6 yards for
scores. Quick caught two passes in the Easkm end zone. John­
son dashed 16 yards to the final LC scon.• of the season.

LC grid careers.
The victory was the eighth in a row and marked the second
