Rape and the law
Htstorically rape became a uammal act b\ bemg seen as a
propem cnme ol man agatnst man. Women were propert) to
be bartered on the marnage market. Rape consututed a crime
that d~maged these .. alued aood!>.
Rap~? has tradlltonally been \tewed as a violation of righh of
possess1on. Modern leR.tl aunud~ about rape .nc stall rooted in
ancient male concepts of propt-rt}'· Rape has not )'et been tullv
pertea..,ed a~ an injuf't to the \'icum·~ bodily antegrtty.
Rape 1s the onl) crime ot vtolenct! "l_lerc the v1ct1m has to
"pro~;e" that she VI a~ attacked. A robbery vacum does not have
to ''prove" she VI as robbed nor doe'> she ha\e to show that she
lorcibl) reisted her attCJder.
Robbery VICtims o.lfC told not to re5i~t and turther endanger
themscl\e~ The victim ol a rape as suppo!>ed to prove that 'he
lorobly resisted "wnhm rea<oon". The lad of brutscs, cut~. and
outward phvsccal damage IS often comtrucd to mean that the
tcum was not raped but willingly con~entcd to the auack.
Rape is hard to deal v.tth stalt~ticalh because the \'tctcm so
~eldom repotb tht-attc~ck . It tS esumated that :tn}where from
two to three..aime' more rapes ha\e actuc~ll) talen place than
are reported. In 19:"3. the FBI reported 51,000 cases of forcible
rape and attempted rape across the U.S .• a me ol62%over il ftve

Esumating that one in fl\le rape tnctdents are reported, a
realistic iigure of 255,000 rape.s and anempted rapes emerge for
19i3. During this ume the FBI rPported 19.510 murders, 416.270
aggravated amauhs, and 382,680 robbett~ . Of the 1973 rape
ca~~ . the FBI made <.~n arrest in only 51%.
The maJOrtty of rape~ take plac~ tn the home. Others occur m
cars, OJl the streets, and rmidc commercral e~tablishments.
Men tend to vtew rape as d VI Oman's problem They prescribe

la~t MondoJy I had one of the mosr intercsttng meals I've had
tn Portland, .md one of the best. I went out to cat w1th my
father, who I hadn't seen for 6 months or so. We went to the
R1cc Bowl.
My father ~hould be of no tnterest to you, but the Rice Bowl
should.
fhc R•cc Bowl offers Mandarin food, wh1ch 1s not a particular
• t)'pc of Chmese food, 1.e., Cantonese, Northern Chinese.
li!Choy, etc, but the best of Ch1nese food. You see. the
Mandarms were the elite tn China up until the Communtsl
Rcvolution . They were the bureaucrats, the ~cholars, rhe
educatt!d ... sort of a nobility. The}' had something that could be
roughly tran)l.ttcd Jl> ·• 'food ltsr'. on wh1ch were the r«!Cipes
that were okayed for Mandarin consumption, in other word\,
not 'pe.tsant fooi:l'. Great CJrc was put into the development of
the rec1pt..~ on the food liSt. My under!otandmg is that most o(
the d1~hell on this food hst onginated as pect~ant food, but were
pt!rtected bt~lorc they were included a~ pdrt ot the llst. Some of
the dtshes were Mandarin Creations . In eff~et. the dishes on
the Mandarm tood list are the besr of the best. The food you are
~erved at the Rice Bowl ·~ on the list.
The tood is also fairly authenuc, I sa) 'fairly' because thi~ is
obv1ously not Chma and there must be some ingredients you
can't get here. ro my mmd, the authentictty is not m question,
becausa· my farher and mother (yes, she was there roo) both
had lived 10 Old Ch1na (before the Revolution). They al o arc
very tra_nk. This sometimes embarra!>ses me. And they satd the
tood wa~ aurhent•c. My mother was 1n •!CSt3C)' over thts one
spice m the dt~h called Royal Delighr char she hadn't tasted
smce China days. It turns out that some of the llpices used m the
cooking at the RKe Bowl are ;urfretghted m from Taawan. Some
ot the tea 15 coo. Mom and D<td say at's the best Chm~c
H!'>l.tur ant in Portland (that they've been to).
Another intere<.ting thing about the Rice Bowl 1s the family
thai owns dnd runs it. Two ot thE: family, Paul and Peter Chang,
Jtt• LC gr<Jd~ . PJul graduated in '68 (I think) and Peter m '74 (I
thmk). Peter W\.1~ ASlC pre!tident. Some of ~ou ma)• remember.
Anvv.ay, Paul, who i~ the 'spokesmJn' ior the famaly (and rhe
on~ rny p.trentc; grilled). and I had an mteresttng talk about
some ol the profs we know 10 common, and rhe Homccommg
(he v. cnt, I didn't), etc.
The R1ce Bowl i5 clefin1tely somewhere you should go. The
tood is eAcellent The pnces are ver} good.

The maJOrtty of rape~ take plac~ tn the home. Others occur m

la~t MondoJy I had one of the mosr intercsttng meals I've had
tn Portland, .md one of the best.
