"Musically, Portland is pretty
rtpe for something to really
happen." -Cal Scott, guitanst and
trumpet player of the Portland
group Moonstone . The two-year·
old band is e~periencing the dif
ficulty of playing all-ongmal music
10 a local sening Scott talked
about the Portland mus1c scene
and its relation to Moonstone's
future.
Do you think Portland allows
for bands to be original?
No. Well, certainly they'll allow
you to be onginal, but nobody
makes any money who doM.
Nobody's really gone about it
qurte the right way. Sunnyland
Band made it tor a long time, sort
of su~ta ined themselv~ . and they
were real fine player~ and really
n1ce people. But they just finally
burned out; the)' weren't getting
anywhere.
People think tho1t !~Ometh1ng has
to come from out of town for rt to
be really good. We'd probably
have more success playtng
somewhere else because we
would be from out of town. you
knowl There has to de\lelop .t
local ~nse of cohes1on. We have
to figure ou1 how to get a local
record company or a loal record
market going. Some people have
started to do rhat; Cary Ogan and
8•11 Lamb have done 11 reasonably
SUC(e)Sfully.
People ha\le to get u!oed to
l1stenang 10 local people on the
loa I radio stations and supporung
local people. Do you think Arbuckle Flat
Coffeehouse is a good thing for
the growth of Portland's music?
It s th«: only place that younger
people can go. Well, there are
some or her places like the Extt and
Mountain Movmg, but acoustical
ly Arbud leis the best. And we've
had succ~s there wath pulling
reasonabl) ' ~oized crowds. We
alway., hcwe d good tame.
Are you gomg to start playing
more? Lately 1t seems that you
haven't been plavlng as much as
you did before
No, we haven't, We w1ll when
the club~ will book us. and when
we can play in )rtuatrom where
we're not ~upposed to be a dance
band
Do you have a hard time get,
tang JObs like that?
Ye.th. There <1re two or three
factor~ why 11') difficult. One is the
Jlature of the place: second i'> how
much they can pay us ... because
we're a pretty large band and
we'vt> been worktng for not nearly
u much as we should be pa1d.
We're dotng almost exclus1vely
ortgtnal matertal, or music by
friends of ours, so as a result h
take ~o people., while to ger famrliar
with •t. 10 get clo\e to the musk
What we really intend to do is to
~el up regular concert\ at college~
and high ~chools and wherever
else wet C<~n, and try to build <t

and that have good acou\tiC. ... We broke even on the Lewi'> and Clark

very well; there were JUSl ~oome

If we did a two or two-and-a
half hour ">how, 1f it was really well
organized and if we sold out. we'd
make more money than we mdke
in tavern~ and we'd have a much
better time. Bur it's JU!>t a matter of

"Musically, Portland is pretty
rtpe for something to really
happen." -Cal Scott, guitanst and
trumpet player of the Portland
group Moonstone . The two-year·
old band is e~periencing the dif
ficulty of playing all-ongmal music
10 a local sening Scott talked
about the Portland mus1c scene
and its relation to Moonstone's
future.
Do you think Portland allows
for bands to be original?
No. Well, certainly they'll allow
you to be onginal, but nobody
makes any money who doM.
Nobody's really gone about it
qurte the right way. Sunnyland
Band made it tor a long time, sort
of su~ta ined themselv~ . and they
were real fine player~ and really
n1ce people. But they just finally
burned out; the)' weren't getting
anywhere.
People think tho1t !~Ometh1ng has
to come from out of town for rt to
be really good. We'd probably
have more success playtng
somewhere else because we
would be from out of town. you
knowl There has to de\lelop .t
local ~nse of cohes1on. We have
to figure ou1 how to get a local
record company or a loal record
market going. Some people have
started to do rhat; Cary Ogan and
8•11 Lamb have done 11 reasonably
SUC(e)Sfully.
People ha\le to get u!oed to
l1stenang 10 local people on the
loa I radio stations and supporung
local people. Do you think Arbuckle Flat
Coffeehouse is a good thing for
the growth of Portland's music?
It s th«: only place that younger
people can go. Well, there are
some or her places like the Extt and
Mountain Movmg, but acoustical
ly Arbud leis the best. And we've
had succ~s there wath pulling
reasonabl) ' ~oized crowds. We
alway., hcwe d good tame.
Are you gomg to start playing
more? Lately 1t seems that you
haven't been plavlng as much as
you did before
No, we haven't, We w1ll when
the club~ will book us. and when
we can play in )rtuatrom where
we're not ~upposed to be a dance
band
Do you have a hard time get,
tang JObs like that?
Ye.th. There <1re two or three
factor~ why 11') difficult. One is the
Jlature of the place: second i'> how
much they can pay us ... because
we're a pretty large band and
we'vt> been worktng for not nearly
u much as we should be pa1d.
We're dotng almost exclus1vely
ortgtnal matertal, or music by
friends of ours, so as a result h
take ~o people., while to ger famrliar

What we really intend to do is to

and that have good acou\tiC. ... We broke even on the Lewi'> and Clark

If we did a two or two-and-a

make more money than we mdke
