Murro~y H;,d t'fl Zaher Wahab. Education Professor, sees flaws in the present tenure policy:
''It relieves the sense of responsibility.'' •
This organization is not a union. It's recommen

univcrsitres adop1 irs suggestions. AAUP
recommends that tenured faculty remain
between 50-670.0 and that tenure can be rescind

of not more than seven year~ 1f they have no
pre' ious ell.perience, but the period mC:ty be
shortened if the)' ht~ve taught, done re~earch or
managerial wor~ , or had similar background.
At LC profes~ors are often tenured before the
~even year .. are up. but each case is submitted to
a bot~rd of students, facult~. and out'>iders . None
are given tenure arbitrarih \\ ahab stresses that
due proccs-; must be exerc1sed and that there
must be fditli in those who judge. If not,

The alternatives
Some schools have set arbirrary tenure quotas,
but this mean., that some profes~ors are denied
tenure not on the grounds or their performance,
but because ol a pre-determined figure. Zaher
Wahab added that some suggest upward and
downward mobiluy. If a consistent level is not
mamtained or raised, status could be lowered, a
raise could be denied. or probation imposed.
Secondary tenure. two tenure periods with re
e' aluation aller the first, offer;, more flexibilit)'.
Contr<tcts tor self-renewal where each individual
must dtdinc goals then me~r them tor advance-
ment are also on the list. To )peed up change on
the f<H end or the scale early c1na phnsea·our
retirement seem~ viable. Profes;;or-s could be
retired earl~ ~nh compensation, retaimng
el.:urih·, or they could be moved to non
e~~enual po,nions. Care must be taken to J\oid
instabilitv too, though. It'~ desirable· for
department to c tablish morale and long-term
programs, accordins to Savage.

The alternatives
Some schools have set arbirrary tenure quotas,
but this mean., that some profes~ors are denied
tenure not on the grounds or their performance,
but because ol a pre-determined figure. Zaher
Wahab added that some suggest upward and
downward mobiluy. If a consistent level is not
mamtained or raised, status could be lowered, a
raise could be denied. or probation imposed.
Secondary tenure. two tenure periods with re
e' aluation aller the first, offer;, more flexibilit)'.
Contr<tcts tor self-renewal where each individual
must dtdinc goals then me~r them tor advance-
ment are also on the list. To )peed up change on
the f<H end or the scale early c1na phnsea·our
retirement seem~ viable. Profes;;or-s could be
retired earl~ ~nh compensation, retaimng
el.:urih·, or they could be moved to non
e~~enual po,nions. Care must be taken to J\oid
instabilitv too, though. It'~ desirable· for

programs, accordins to Savage.
