Last week's tree forum '" the chapel pro\•1ded vet another
p1cture of why students htwe so little to do with the actual
runnmg of the college
Pres1dent Howard spent 40 minutes explaining the
backgrouno of the problems with the deodora cedar.s, go~ng
back to the 1920's to give the whole story. The proliferation
of detatls must have tart no srone unturned . In contrast. the
op101ons advanced by the students turned up lew. tt any. new
adeas Most of 1t ~~tas samply opmjon-plain. uninformed
OpiniOn.
It's the sort of unmformed opmton that you laugh about
when you hear It coming from some "stupid hardhat." But It
has the same nng to 1t, the same unfactual. emotaonal pleas.
the same feehng that the pleader IS gettmg screwed by
somebody "htgher up" It amounts to gripang and it has the
same effect. That 1s. no effect.
The students gnped at last week's forum the same as they
gnped last year about sophomores bemg reqUired to hve on
campus And 11 the trees do come down It should not come
as a blow to anybody. The same dynam1c apathy that helped
sophomores lrve on campus thts year w11l probably help the
trees come down.
It's not as though nobody cares. Lord knows, we all care.
It's JUSt that nobody does much of anything. Nobody stood
up at the forum and otfered a well-thought-out alternative
plan Nobody had done an)'' research on the destgn of the
campus. or asked any architects lor advtce Nobody had any
reahst1c alternatives to offer.
It ts sad but real that student opin1on doesn't always count
for a lot around here But most of the advances that have
been made that students approve of-hke 24-hour intervas­
have been made at the expense of a lot of hours of research,
plannmg and d1ny work. It has worked before and tt should
wor for JUSt about anythmg you want to try. 1ncludmg a pub
on campus
As 1t ts, watching students at events like the tree forum
rem1nds one of all those middle-class people who nod and
agree wtth you that the V1etnam War IS bad and so 1s rac1sm
But they do nothtng. They go home and watch 1V. or dnnk,
or smoke dope or whatver nice, stable middle-class people
of any age do J.O
