WithWestern DilemmasTol-t§,t_t. with apopulation ofllmillion. istheworld's
Largest city today. Formerly known asEdo. itwas theseat

itwas only alittle longer than ahundred years ago. then.
thtJapan has been open towestern eyes. However. this
pastt-entury has witnessed acancerous growth ofrows of
tittlty tacky instant apartment high-rises and gray factories
tpt-tttttg black smoke over thet:lty.
The concentrated population density ofTokyo isembodied
tocrowds eterywhere. especially inthedlnshas andstations
tlrush hour.
lwas not surprised tosee people packed intheaisles of
tit-partment stores. moving asasoliti mass.becausethc Ameri-
cancounterpart issimilar during theChristmas season. But
th|lt- thegrocery shopping isarelaxing. leisurely activity
to-tmertca. Tokyo housewives battle daily asthey squeeze and
edge down the narrow aisles. skillfully weaving their food-
lttlt-n baskets around people.
ftlttt-cover. together with overloading thesenses ofsight and
touch through body contact. thegrocery market offers a
txcnphony oisounds: women chattering with oneanother. and
mothers calling forlost children astheir voices compete with
theemployees ofthemarket describing thequalities oftheir
goods andbeckoning customers totrythem.
Itisdifficult toimagine how vast and complex Tokyo's
transportation network must beinorder tosupply itsmillions
ttlththefood andother goods needed daily. Oneoften wonders
I-hat chaos would result ifarailway strike were called.
along with this. people pollution isthe inescapable ac-
tornpanying problem ofsanitation. While themetropolitan and
tutiunai governments are spending funds forbeautiful super-
lllghways. Tokyo's essential problem offinding more efficient
lays ofsewage disposal lsbeing neglected. Thecity will
lnetitably suffer from this irnperceptive priority ofinterests.
Although thewater tastes ofasynthetlc mixture ofchemicals.
lltere isarelative absence ofairpollution which hasbeen so
tlpltalized upon inominous reports appearing innewspapers
andmagazines intheU.S.
Because the Japanese personlity exhibits ndichotomy of
tttnperment. Tokyo isatthesametimetradltlonaland modern.
Many oftheancient Japanese ideals are still practiced
inthehome. themost evident being thespecial roles assigned
topeople according toage. occupation oraccomplishments.
status and sex. Insuch ahierarchical society. each person
itaware and thus secure inhisrelative standing with others.
Hutthegrowing intensity and number ofalienated youth
from thetraditional culture isalso evident inTokyo. Young
lltttple frequently mimic western tie.modern. intheir opinlonl
llress and mannerisms. forsaking historical values such as
filial deference. Perhaps they areonly temporarily dazzled
bl’western behavior. but there are also those whohave
tttmpletely rejected allofJapan's deep and rich cultural
heritage.
Both types ofyoung people arealienated from each other.
Theformer. because beisrestricted bytherole helsexpected
“llPlay. and thelatter. because hecannot accept anypart of
fllianese life. andtherefore. hisownself.
Tokyo isthen acity dazzled bymodern tie.we-sternl
achievements. However. her roots are still mainly ina
traditional heritage. The past decades ofmassive importa-
tionofwestern culture must cease oratleast slow down.

WithWestern DilemmasTol-t§,t_t. with apopulation ofllmillion. istheworld's
Largest city today. Formerly known asEdo. itwas theseat

itwas only alittle longer than ahundred years ago. then.
thtJapan has been open towestern eyes. However. this
pastt-entury has witnessed acancerous growth ofrows of
tittlty tacky instant apartment high-rises and gray factories
tpt-tttttg black smoke over thet:lty.
The concentrated population density ofTokyo isembodied
tocrowds eterywhere. especially inthedlnshas andstations
tlrush hour.
lwas not surprised tosee people packed intheaisles of
tit-partment stores. moving asasoliti mass.becausethc Ameri-
cancounterpart issimilar during theChristmas season. But
th|lt- thegrocery shopping isarelaxing. leisurely activity
to-tmertca. Tokyo housewives battle daily asthey squeeze and
edge down the narrow aisles. skillfully weaving their food-
lttlt-n baskets around people.
ftlttt-cover. together with overloading thesenses ofsight and
touch through body contact. thegrocery market offers a
txcnphony oisounds: women chattering with oneanother. and
mothers calling forlost children astheir voices compete with
theemployees ofthemarket describing thequalities oftheir
goods andbeckoning customers totrythem.
Itisdifficult toimagine how vast and complex Tokyo's
transportation network must beinorder tosupply itsmillions
ttlththefood andother goods needed daily. Oneoften wonders
I-hat chaos would result ifarailway strike were called.
along with this. people pollution isthe inescapable ac-
tornpanying problem ofsanitation. While themetropolitan and
tutiunai governments are spending funds forbeautiful super-
lllghways. Tokyo's essential problem offinding more efficient
lays ofsewage disposal lsbeing neglected. Thecity will
lnetitably suffer from this irnperceptive priority ofinterests.
Although thewater tastes ofasynthetlc mixture ofchemicals.
lltere isarelative absence ofairpollution which hasbeen so
tlpltalized upon inominous reports appearing innewspapers
andmagazines intheU.S.
Because the Japanese personlity exhibits ndichotomy of
tttnperment. Tokyo isatthesametimetradltlonaland modern.
Many oftheancient Japanese ideals are still practiced
inthehome. themost evident being thespecial roles assigned
topeople according toage. occupation oraccomplishments.
status and sex. Insuch ahierarchical society. each person
itaware and thus secure inhisrelative standing with others.
Hutthegrowing intensity and number ofalienated youth
from thetraditional culture isalso evident inTokyo. Young
lltttple frequently mimic western tie.modern. intheir opinlonl
llress and mannerisms. forsaking historical values such as
filial deference. Perhaps they areonly temporarily dazzled
bl’western behavior. but there are also those whohave
tttmpletely rejected allofJapan's deep and rich cultural
heritage.
Both types ofyoung people arealienated from each other.
Theformer. because beisrestricted bytherole helsexpected
“llPlay. and thelatter. because hecannot accept anypart of
fllianese life. andtherefore. hisownself.
Tokyo isthen acity dazzled bymodern tie.we-sternl
achievements. However. her roots are still mainly ina
traditional heritage. The past decades ofmassive importa-
tionofwestern culture must cease oratleast slow down.
Asacityincontusion. Tokyo must nowprecisely determine
