Chaplain it did
As the rats were crowded closer, they became more
of themsel\'t~s as rals.
They developed something called rat consciousnc...c;s, which
not been known among their spedcs prior to that time. They
covered who they were and they realized that the scientists
their enemies.
The sctentists did not understand what was happening m
tub. They continued to throw more rats inside but they fallcd
constder that they were creatmg unhealthy conditions. not onh
the rats, but for scJentlst.s as well
Since the) had managed to forget what they were reatl~
to the rals, lhey could not imagine that any rat would be ~ne1
wtth them
After all. they reasoned. they were not killing rats, they
only getting them out of the laboratory where sctentist had to
and work
Reminding themselves of the food they provJCled, they took
certain pleasure m their superiority as humane and rat1onal bf>im
lnstde the tub the rats had stopped clawmg at each other
had begun to build a Uving ladder whlch enabled them to climb
the stde
And so, on~ Sunday mommg while the scientists were
around the lavuratol) smokmg, talking and looking out the
dow. lhl' head of the ftrst red-eyed and angry rat appeared
the edge of the tub.
The precffi!ing allegory was wrilten by W. H. Blanchard,
psychologist and student of revolutions . He has written the
"Rousseau and the Spint of Revolt."
