Students and faculty members seem to be laking a great de.

Strangely enough, though, there is a certain percentage of st

but rather has dedded lo remain "easy going, rruddle-of -tht.~ ·NW'

When backed into a corner they are ''undecided," "don't kno
or "not sure." Who are these pt.>ople? What do they believe
How do they think?
In order to find out, I decided to talk to the presrdent of Ill

''Why did you form such a society here?"
"I hesitate to answer that I guc~ rt's because there are

"How do you qualify for the organization?" I mqulred.
"By not having any convictions and b> sllcking b) them

"That sounds difficult,' I commented .

"Well, then,'' I inquired, "what do you talk about?"

This is one of the most important men at City Hall.
His name is Bill Bowes ~ and he runs our Department of Public Works .
You don't read many headlines about him,
but our toilets flush in the sewers he
builds, and the sludge (75-million gallons
of tt a day) is made safe in the sewage
treatment plants he operates.
He paves our streets, unsnarls our ttaf
frc. cleans-up after storms. and dtsposes of 350 truckloads of garbage a day, every
day, 365 days a year.
A tough, untidy, unglamorous JOb. Not
everybody would want it-but Bill Bowes
does. Not everybody could handle it. Bill
Bowes can.

Students and faculty members seem to be laking a great de.

tcrest
Strangely enough, though, there is a certain percentage of st
dents, as well as faculty members, which has not taken a stand
but rather has dedded lo remain "easy going, rruddle-of -tht.~ ·NW'

When backed into a corner they are ''undecided," "don't kno
or "not sure." Who are these pt.>ople? What do they believe
How do they think?
In order to find out, I decided to talk to the presrdent of Ill

''Why did you form such a society here?"
"I hesitate to answer that I guc~ rt's because there are

"A political poll would show that people like us run mlo
millions throughout the country, not to mention the number of

"How do you qualify for the organization?" I mqulred.
"By not having any convictions and b> sllcking b) them

''ll we support Morse, the Packwood people will hate us. II

alternative but to remain in the middle of the road "
"That sounds difficult,' I commented .
"It isn't easy these days.'' the president stghed "E~ta

to read anything or to talk to students who look too radtcal
'We never discuss student affairs or national politics in

"Well, then,'' I inquired, "what do you talk about?"
"Nothing much We have only one rule. If anyone expres

This is one of the most important men at City Hall.
His name is Bill Bowes ~ and he runs our Department of Public Works .
You don't read many headlines about him,
but our toilets flush in the sewers he
builds, and the sludge (75-million gallons
of tt a day) is made safe in the sewage
treatment plants he operates.
He paves our streets, unsnarls our ttaf
frc. cleans-up after storms. and dtsposes of 350 truckloads of garbage a day, every
day, 365 days a year.
A tough, untidy, unglamorous JOb. Not
everybody would want it-but Bill Bowes
does. Not everybody could handle it. Bill
Bowes can.
