The promotion of on open press is ot
stoke. We must decide now whether this
paper is to be o scanty news sheet or o
journal of college opinion.
The Log never hos been ond never will be o
publication of the journalism deportment. It is
published by the Associated Students of Lewis
ond Clork. Yet readers insist on thinking thot
the paper is put out by a select few who toke
journalism courses and who know how to write.
Woe to the athletic or drama departments if only
majors participated in sports ond dromotics.
The crisis is this. The Log con continue to put out o sheet in
which its news ond social news columns out-number the commentaries,
fetters to the editor ond articles. It con continue to foist work
upon the deportment majors who must he too involved with production
work to write opinion moteriol. It con continue to rely on fresh·
mon to write news about people ond things they hove never heard of
before.
But it won't
No student on this campus will take over next year a publication that offers no challenge. No
student now on the staff will want to return to such a paper. .
This year we have begun to show you how people outside of the department can build a news
paper. The work is far from finished .
We are dependmg on you. It must bo you who will write tho commentaries. letter to the ~tor and articles
in what ever field you specialize. whether you ato a student or faculty membor. These aro a necessary pall
of a journal of opinion.
This is the crisis. Are you prepared to lose even the proqress ~at has now been ma?e? The journalism
department can give no answer. Only you can. We hove seven LSSUes left to furthor lh1S Loq as a college
pap or. a journal of opinion.
It is up to you. -P10~ LOO

-P10~ LOO
