At lhe rote tlns year's student council is going, alums r'-'-
turning ne.~t fall will have n herd lime r'-"CCgni.z.ing their tra
ditional homeeommg festivities.
Homecoming, along with May Fete, H nging o{ the Green,
and grndualion are probnbly whnt Lewis and Clark, in its
short e.'i\ist.ance, cnn clntm ns traditions. The studl!nl council
hns suggested complete refacing of the homecoming program.
lf the council gets its way. the gain homccommg parade,
which threaded its way through downtown Portlnnd streets
for the past fh·e years, will be n thing of the past. Hours of
work went mto the floats that made up the parade, n parade
lhat reached Rose Festh•nl proportions . Students as well as
alums wei'C dub1ous of the reaction people of Portland hnd to
wnrd Ute pnradc. The student council feels that not enough
reward of recognition variety comes from the parade so other
kinds of homecoming ac:thritie..s were suggested.
Campus displays lJ3\'e been suggested. How much outside
rcc<lgnttion will this college get for this kind of labor? Cer
taml) no more than from the downtown parade! We hope the
counctl doesn't ha\'e the idea that Portland and the ~-urround
ing area wall accept this kind of show ala Peacock Lane.
The question is asked-Is homecoming planned !or the
benefit or the alums or for the publicity it provides for the
college? We think it should do both. We hope that the stu
dents and alumni will not become so self-centered as to lose
sight of the value in public relations h~meco~ing . carri~s .
Someday Lewis and Clark's nlumm organJZ.nt10n wall be
large. the college's traditions strong. Portland will come to u~.
Right now, with a small alumni. we must strengthen tradi-
tions and go aut and gel Portland.
