However the line must be drawn somewhere. We feel
there ha~ been enough space devoted to th-.• subJcb of drama

1f1
In a prominent place on our list of New Year's resolution~
should be an underlined reminder to do our share again this
year ior the World Unh·ersity Service drive.
In countries of lhe world this new year has brought the
heartfelt thanks from students who have receh'L'<i aid from
our contr1butions to this cause.
LewlS and Clark placed third among all northwest col
leges and uru,·ersiltes Ul per capita contribution to the drive
according to the \\ U5 bulletin pubhshed recently, with an
a\·erage indi\'idual dorution of 42 cents. Vlc were led m the
dr.i\'e by Willamette. with an n,•erage of 52 cents per cap1ta
and College of Idaho, with a 44-cent: average. As always, how-
ev-er., more is needed.
This constant plea for money may seem endless to us;
yet why should we have so much, when olhers have so little.
From the pro,•ince of Assam, India. wh1ch has one or the
greatest rnin!alls m the world, the WUS secretary \\Tltes:
"Assam is now under the gnei of severe floods and
eroSJons. Dibrgargh, the most noted industnal tea growing
center of A..~ and Palashbari, about 20 mUes away from
Gnuhatt, are fast eaten up by the furious and errat.lc Brahma
putra river. About 3000 !am1lies are rendered homeless by
fatal erosion. Half of Assam has been under '"'aler for months
together causing ravages to standing crops ammals, and men.
You cannot unagine in what condition.s we are pulhng on.
Entire energy of the students, public. and government ~as
been canalized in helping the crosJOn-stncken people of
Assam. Under ihe CJrcumstances, we fail to mnke any head
way m complding our WUS medical cenll!r and recreation
club. \\re cannot get money for these purposi!S now as people
are more concerned wilh rendering help and assistance to
marooned people rather than these things though they arc of
\'italtmporLance to the cause or state.''
The awkward Enghsb of this native's letler helps evt=n
more to make the plea urgent. ProJects such as the recreation
club and medical center are built largely with ·wus funds
whUe local funds go to reconstruction, flood control and other
tu5lts which aid in keepmg the people ahve.
As we prepare to gtve in the forthcoming drJvc, let's keep
m nund this storv of some of the uses of the ·wus fund.

This constant plea for money may seem endless to us;
yet why should we have so much, when olhers have so little.
