"l'ior unto you is born this day in the CJty ot Dav1d n sa,•iour,
whtc.h is Christ the Lord."
N ·t weekend we wllJ celebrntc Clu·1stmos, the b1rthdny
of Jesus Cimst. 'to some of us Christmas mc:ms just that.
To some of us it means gh·ing and receiving gifts, n time for
smg1ng carols. n llme to be with our fam1hes. To some of us it
is no more than another occasion to ha\'c .a good time.
Whl•n we gh·e gifts at Christmas time, either coru;ciously or
unconsc.iou. Jy we nre in a small wny trying to cxpre::;s the
lo'-e limt Almighty God showed 1900 ) ears ago when he s~nt
his only son. Jesus Christ to earth ns n giit ·to mankind.
w·hen we gather together to sing Chrtstmas carols, we are
observing a custom started that night <Of long DfilO when as
observed in the second chapter of Luke, ''-And suddenl:y
there was with the angcls a multitude of the hem·enly host
prmsing God and saying. Glory to God in the highest, and
on earth, peace, good will towal"d men." We are praising God
for hlS love, consciouslv or unconsciouslv.
~ -The real meaning of Christmas has been buried under a
landslide of rommcrcialiSm, modernistic ideology and rooted
customs from the old countries but the basic bclief remain.
Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth. This cannot
be uprooted.
Fnnzil · Tradition
At Lewis and Clark coll~ge, students faculty and admm
lSlmllon often compare their relationship to that of the !am
tly. The relative ~"lnallness of the staff, sludcnt body and cam
pus encourages contact.s, which resemble those common
among a fnrnily unit.
So 1t JS at ti1e close of the campus calendar year, the "Plo
neer family .. gathers in the theate1· to obsen'E! the traditional
"Hangmg of the Green." Dating back to a custom popular
with re:sidents of the fifteenth century England, the LC ,·er
sion features the e~Change of wishes and kisses on the yule
log. the actual hangmg of greenery from the balcony walls
and the sc.ning of wassail at the ronclus:ion of the all-college
sing <:ompetition.
But most important, it pro, rides for the campus family the
opportunity of joining together to perpetuate a 400-year-old
custom based upon an event 1953 years old.
May the afiect1on, good will and happiness, which has here
tofore marked the annual ''Hanging of the Grl!en," again be
with our family this year. PIONEER LOG

PIONEER LOG
