Chapel Speaker Observes Rapid Campus Acceptance
Throughout US of Revised Standard Version of Bible Elsewhere on th1s pAge nppcars a lett\!!' from alumnus
Pete Hnhn who, fr,om his lonelv ~tnUon m Alnskn. writes us
in protest of the mnnner m which f1 e.shm('n are b~:mg wel·
corned to tln:s campus.
\\'e do not wholly agree \\"th his comments, whidt is not
to :slw thnt the'' are without nwrat, but :such letters "to font.' us • • 1o examine the ~lluatmn as 1t stnnds and attempt .tn anlvsis
of it~ merit~.
The \'Olces of protest rabed ngninsl what is commonl.Y
known as "freshman lmnng" arc bnst:-d upon two rather Sl'n·
cral principles:.Fi1·st. that the whole id~n is wrong m prmciple
and is a violation of the l'ights of mnn nnd, ~ceond ly, that the
idea ts not harmful but U1e manne1· m which the practice is
car.ned out ''iolntes the princtpll'.s of fun nnd fellowshtp that
lte behind it.
It seems to us Uta\ most of lhC' critictsm oi this ycar.'s
frosh initiation is directed at the latter. The sloppy and tn·
con~istent hnndling of freshman rcgulnlsons and their en·
forcement has become apparent not only to the freshmen but
to all members of the student body.
Whene,•e.r an already debatable pracuce is carrleo on m
an ineff1cient or imprope~· mnnn~r. it is bound to open itsell
to murh more ~e,·ere critictSm. We do not obJect to, frfshman
hnzing, in fnct we belie\·c that if properly handl~?d it can bl! a
source of enjoyment to all parties concerned. On th~ othet
hand, improper handhng of this matter can kill the enjoyment
and even induce resentments wh1ch mny be more thnn pass
ing.
If Lewis and Clark is to continue its present program to
ward the !rosh, then futut e years must see a more cons1~tent
and clear policy set forth. Otherwise it would seem that dis
contmuance would be preferable to the present muddle. "A mnr\'cli'lus J'\!SJx>rl'•~'" to the
