He states that btg bustness must hn,·c· college's basic n.."'-
search m order to continue raising American :standards of
lhymg.
We feel that Sloan has o sound and logical nrgurnent, an
argument thnt holds stable under keen mtellectual scrutiny.
Many colleges, cspcclnlly the smaller private ~chools..
are fmdmg ll bard put to continue operatmg. They arc work
mg under the band1cap of smoll, underpaid staff.s and more
mane,· must be a,·ailnble to these staffs if teaclung standards
~
as "..: ha\-e known them are to be maintained.
Here at Lewis nnd Clark tlus IS well Illustrated. The
school has bt..~ forced to slightly cut its swf:f temporanly
due to smaller enrollments and inroads made by drafting of
men for m11itary se.nrice.
Higher educatton today ha!i mnny of the same problems
and debts Qwed to society as docs b1g business. Therefore. i•
seems to us the financ1al help th~t could be rendered 1.•1
schools by corporations would b~ to thQ benefit of both.
Would corporations be legally justtflL'CI in makmg monc
tan· contributions to mstatutians of learning?
• ln prncucally all of the few cases that h::we come before
the courts on this sub)ecl there has been strong judicwl sup-
port for corporate givmg. This was recently given impetus by
the New 'York state legislnture when it amended its general
corporntion law.
This amendment allows corporations to cooperate with
others and to support cducattonal, scientific and charitable
orgam.wuons.
Corporate fmancial md IS needed now and the sooner il
comes the more prosperous and thriving educational system

The draft deferment tests are completed e..xcept for those
who, because of 11elig1ous belief, failed to take theirs last Sat
urdav. • Opinions of the participants seem to range !rom the test's
ha\·ing been fairly easy to those who are sure that they ·will
be rnufti..cJad rifle.toters come this fall. Noticeable was the
fact that no one seemed to thmk that the test was a snap.
Tius m 11Sell proves a fact •• .and a significant one at
that. Selective sen·1ce showed their earnestness in the scheme
by uncorking a test \\•hich w1ll undoubtedly throw quite a
number of college men over the nation for a loss. 1 t was de
Stgned to separate the scholars from the joy-boys and from
all appearances to date 1t wlll probably do just that.
This wtll l~ve the men who are granted a deferment
wJth a pleasant taste m the1r mouths. It w1ll be evident to
them that this is a deferment well-earned and one bv which •
the nation will ,gam the most bc.nofil.

We feel that Sloan has o sound and logical nrgurnent, an
argument thnt holds stable under keen mtellectual scrutiny.
Many colleges, cspcclnlly the smaller private ~chools..
are fmdmg ll bard put to continue operatmg. They arc work
mg under the band1cap of smoll, underpaid staff.s and more
mane,· must be a,·ailnble to these staffs if teaclung standards

as "..: ha\-e known them are to be maintained.
