A poem lo\•cly as &(rhododendron) tree.''
These words of consolation we offer our colleagues
across the river at Reed college. They ho\TC JUSt suffered
a great loss. Shakespeare island, long Reed's traditional
''Shelly by .moonlight • lrysting spot. has been turned O\•er
to the Oregon Rhododendron soc1ety.
We nr.e naturally shoeked b~ the mumat1on of certam
of the CJty council, whose ruling subslltuted the posies for
the poetry. that more \\'00 than poetry was being pltched
on the island. Such hnrsh and crude accusations must ha"e
mdeed grated agatnst the delicate cultural sensibilities of
the easts1de.rs. The) were probably so stunned that it was
all they could do t.o don Shak--espearean costumes and pose
for publicity shots.
None the less, we must vle\v whh alarm this encroach·
ment on cultural pursu1ts. It's getting so an intellectual can't
enJOY a quiet evening \\~th Shelly or Shakespeare any more.
Besides, no matter what the city counol 6ays, we still
believe you really were reading poetry.

Boxes vs. nzoke
'\\'hat has happened to commurucat1on on the campus?
Intelligence between indhiduals and organization has
been reduced Lo word of mouth status Wntten messages to
mdtVJduals ha\•e a 50-50 chance of being deliver:ed.
• The :reason-the spectacular snafu in the post office.
Under ilie ne\\• setup th1s year, indhiduals must pny .25
cents for a post office box. Due to the apparent advanced
State of poverty of the majority of the students, the boxes
have not been selling like the proverbial hotcakes In !act,
there bas been a notable ~eluctance on the part or many
to so m'•est their funds.
With so many students thus reduced lo near anonymity,
contacting Jnd1virluals becomes a tAsk for the FBl or mtss
mg pel'1SOns bureau.
Is th1s necessary? Cannot the post office be supported

Last year·.s system of a.5Slgrung boxes .alphabetically
\\"Ithout addiuonal charge) seemed to work smoothly
enough. At least nearly everyone was aware he had a post
office box and the majonty even c.bec~~ed them occaSionally.
If additional funps are needed to support the post office,
whv not add 25 cents to the tuition? -Let's not be reduced to beat1ng tom-toms to call organi·

Is th1s necessary? Cannot the post office be supported

enough. At least nearly everyone was aware he had a post
office box and the majonty even c.bec~~ed them occaSionally.
If additional funps are needed to support the post office,
whv not add 25 cents to the tuition? -Let's not be reduced to beat1ng tom-toms to call organi·
