The fate of eight Lewts and Clark students is
being dectded this week at a trialm Hillsboro . The
students were arrested on October 23 at FLIR
(Forward Looking Infra-Red) Sy~tems Inc., whiJe
prote,ung the sale of traclang dev1ces said to be used
to direct gun frre at peasants in El Salvador.
The uial. wh1ch began on Tuesday of last week.
ts presently heanng the state present evtdence against
the protestors The verdtct 1s e~pected to be brought
in on Monday at 3 pm.
The students involved c;ay they participated in
c1vil dtsobedience because they felt it was the only
way to have their ObJeCLlons concerning FLIR
Systems heard. Those students are: Karl
Schomburg, senior: Peter Galvm, jumor~ Jonathan
Mozzochi, sophomore; Cate W11ke, freshman; Joe
Whttelen; Molly Sturges, sophomore; Lisa Meyers
and E1leen Nettler. freshman.
Fifteen defendants are repre enting themselve~
Schomberg and Galvin opted to defend their own
actions Other defendants plan to go at the charge
on a factual ba,ts by provmg they were not given a
chance to leave before being arre\ted. Five
protestors are pleading no conte~t and \everal have
pleaded guilty in a sripulauon of fact' tnal. admitting
they were mstdc: of the tcnce
Sturges pleaded no conte\t m order to participate
in the Kenya program during wmter tem1. touochi
pleaded no contest last week and has been releas~d
from compul ory attendence at the trial.
