Women's Basketball Team

1905 Women's State Basketball Champions. Albany College always received women on equal terms with men, not making separate rules for them as with some neighboring colleges. Organized in 1899, the women's basketball team was a pioneer in the state. In 1905 the team tied Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) for the state championship. A play-off game was arranged to be held at the neutral ground of the Portland YMCA. The Albany women won, 20-12. Martha Montague

Martha Montague graduated from Albany College in 1910 and later joined the Lewis & Clark College faculty as a professor of history in 1943. From fall of 1943-1958 she served as assistant librarian, and from 1958-68, the college archivist.
